So Very Close
14 October 2014 | by (Boston, Ma) – See all my reviews

There is a lot to like about this movie. Like Shaun of the Dead, it's a relationship picture inside of a horror movie. Yes, the premise of a snuff company webcasting murders has been done and probably done better but that's not the point. The point is 6 people trapped in a closet wondering who'll gets offed next. The script works for the most part. Flashes of good social commentary pop up here and there such as the statement that "Dane Cook is a national treasure". However, Stewart tends to turn one-liners into plot points. That's one example of some of the problems with this movie. The final monologue about strength and growth cheapened the whole movie leaving the "shock" ending not that shocking.

Given the low budget, I can *almost* forgive the uneven sound quality but obvious re-records left me wincing. Some of the blood splatter gets done digitally due to budget constraints, but I think they missed an opportunity by trying to make it look natural instead of going all digital and establishing it as a quirky convention.

BUT - the opening credits looked gorgeous with a lot of interesting ideas I've never seen. The same holds true with the editing. Nice job!
