Arguably The Weakest Episode Of The Mini-Series
20 April 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Homeland is the third and arguably the weakest episode of the mini- series. It tells the story of Joshua, who led the Israelites in the Battle Of Jericho to conquer the land of Canaan. The scenes were definitely a spectacle as the CGI scenes were magnificent. It will definitely entertain the viewer. But unfortunately,it was more of a visual spectacle rather than lesson we could possibly learn from this Biblical story like what God can do in overcoming seemingly impossible odds when He is on our side and have faith in Him.But it does not end there. The retelling of the story of Samson was even worse.

In the second part of the series,we get to witness the story of Samson, who was tasked by God to lead the Israelites in their battle against the Philistines. In it,we get to see how an angel of the Lord appears to Manoah's barren wife and promised her that she is going to have a son that will possess an enormous strength.Added to that,we get to see how the Philistines are rendered helpless against Samson due to his superhuman strength, how he fell in love with Delilah - the woman who betrayed him by cutting his hair after he told her of the secret - and how God allowed him to redeem himself by giving him back his strength in the last day of his life to be able to kill many Philistines.

While the story of Samson was interesting,it was somewhat far from realistic. In it,we get to see him portrayed by a black actor. This maybe somewhat refreshing especially with people who are used to remembering Victor Mature portraying the Israelite judge in the film entitled,Samson And Delilah. It could have been a good one.But unfortunately,it wasn't.The fact is that Samson was portrayed as someone who is a violent and an irrational human being. He is someone who cannot live a day without killing any Philistine. Also,we get to see him portrayed as someone who is lacking intelligence as he was completely fooled by Delilah instead of someone who was completely trusting and fell into a woman's charm.Added to that, the actor who portrayed him is more like a wrestler who is fat and overweight rather than a muscular actor. These reason made it a big let down. Also,I was saddened that only the story of Samson was told among the many judges.Probably this was due to the many action scenes it will provide. It would have been great if they could have included the story of Gideon too.But Burnett and Downey didn't.We can only guess why.
