The "sinning by silence" quote mentioned by Levine and Beckett refers to a line by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, in the 1914 poem 'Protest' (from 'Poems of Problems'): "To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards out of men." It was wrongly attributed to Lincoln by Gen Douglas MacArthur in 1950, paraphrased in the form Beckett uses (dropping the word "out"), although the poem was published 49 years after Lincoln died.
