‘Dancing with the Stars’ Finale Caps Strong November for ABC

17 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

While NBC has won a third straight November sweep in adults 18-49 and CBS prevailed yet again in total viewers, the big takeaway from the four-week ratings period was a strong showing by ABC.

The Alphabet, whose “Dancing With the Stars” ended its latest edition Tuesday with the show’s best in-season numbers in two years, retained all of its year-ago 18-49 audience during the month while its rivals were down double-digits, according to Nielsen “live plus same-day” estimates for 27 of the sweep’s 28 nights.

And by holding steady in same-day numbers — a big accomplishment these days due to ever-increasing levels of time-shifted viewing that is done in the days after a show’s initial telecast — ABC leap-frogged CBS for second place in adults 18-49.

It also opened up a bigger lead on its rivals in non-sports numbers, with its average through Tuesday (2.1/6, even with last year) putting it half »

TV Ratings: 'NCIS: New Orleans' leads CBS, 'MasterChef Junior' dips, 'Flash' rises on Tuesday

19 November 2014 8:46 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, November 18, 2014. "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" were both up week-to-week, leading CBS to a dominant overall win and a tight victory among young viewers on Tuesday.  Tuesday primetime featured a lot of little week-to-week fluctuations, including "New Girl" and "The Mindy Project" both rising a tiny bit despite a drop for "MasterChef Junior." Over on ABC, a "Shark Tank" repeat comfortably outperformed recent comedy block numbers and helped "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." inch up. Presumably that "Shark Tank" repeat also was responsible for some of the "MasterChef" decline, though that's total speculation. Most of the night's increases and decreases were pretty minimal, but "NCIS: New Orleans" added nearly two million viewers over last week's airing, which came against the second half of a two-hour "The Voice," rather than NBC's significantly lower-rated comedies. And even those NBC comedies were way up from their last airing, »

Weekly Ratings: Three-Show Crossover Stunt Lifts NBC to Top

19 November 2014 5:48 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

NBC took the sweeps staple of crossover storylines to a new level last week, as a running plot involving characters from the net’s three Dick Wolf dramas produced a ratings surge for each show. The stunt, along with “Sunday Night Football,” “The Blacklist” and three nights of “The Voice” carried the Peacock to a ratings victory in key demos.

In a down week for CBS, NBC also scored a rare victory in total viewers —  its first for a full week in the November sweep since 2002, and its first in any sweep month (excluding Olympics weeks) since the week of the “Friends” finale in May 2004.

“Sunday Night Football,” featuring a great quarterback matchup between Tom Brady’s New England Patriots and Andrew Luck’s Indianapolis Colts produced strong ratings (7.1/19 in 18-49, 20.82 million viewers overall), standing as the week’s No. 2 primetime show in 18-49 and No. 1 in total viewers, according to Nielsen. »

Arrow Recap: The Boxing Glove Arrow... and Other Stuff

This week on The CW’s Arrow, onetime Starling City vigilante Ted Grant landed in Oliver’s sights, while Roy came to believe that it was he who killed Sara. But first and foremost….

We got the Boxing Glove Arrow. Which obviously must be what showrunner Marc Guggenheim was teasing during this Q&A, about delivering a moment that fans have been asking about since the pilot. Of course, Arrow being the gritty superhero drama it is, having a glove “accordion” out of an arrow would be a bit goofy, so they instead orchestrated an “organic” way for it to come about, »
