When Lynnett is speaking to Jane while making a green-colored cake for Tom, she explains that its a tradition from years before - she wanted to make a red velvet cake but didn't have red food coloring and used green instead. However, red velvet cake gets its color from a chemical reaction between cocoa and acidic ingredients like vinegar and buttermilk. Although red food coloring can be added to enhance the color, it isn't necessary and Lynnett could have made the cake without it. See more »
