Romance Not Gore
clavainov30 November 2016
The pacing is pretty bad and there's hardly any gore, so if that's what you're after you won't find it here. That said, the gore is central enough to the premise that if you dislike gore then this film won't work for you either.

The filmmaking isn't bad - there's some nice parallel action and the cinematography is pretty good - but it's still not really sufficient to hold your attention. As horror films go it's okay, but the focus on romance make it seem more like drama than horror - drama bookended by pretty tame torture-porn.

I'd recommend watching it if you don't have much else to do and you like mediocre romance and implied violence. There are some plot twists which are pretty stupid to be honest, but at least they tried to do something original.

Really engaging but ultimately confused and pointless. Very well acted and directed but I must be a complete numpty because I was very unsatisfied after really enjoying the story as far as it went... Then it just stopped

Low Budget Torture Romance
kosmasp18 June 2017
Technically speaking this has some things going for it. They made an effort to make this look good (no pun intended). It does however lack in the acting department. Overall it's obvious this is a low budget affair and it's up to you if you are willing to cut it some slack for that or nor care at all.

Having said that, it has a nice flow to it and it tries a couple of things time-line wise. Not everything works of course and there are quite a few hick-ups and bumps along the road. But this dares and tries to be different in a few aspects and I admire that. I haven't checked if there has been another movie made after this one, but I can imagine this being a learning experience that would make future movies better. Tighter script, better actors ... could make all the difference

Awful just awful
verarose-4649721 July 2020
Not worth the energy to write about possibly the worst film I have ever seen. I have dug deep and there is not one good thing about this god awful film, except your life is worth more than wasting your time on this.

A pretentious mess
gregerogerigegege31 May 2019
The dialogue is strange, the lovers have no chemistry, the Australian actors make inconsistent efforts to hide their accents, the story is ridiculous and ultimately pointless despite the obvious attempt at being profound, and the whole movie goes on for far too long. The film looks good and has a few scenes (or parts of scenes) that work, but most of it will leave you shaking your head in disbelief.

Great concept, mediocre execution
rubyredrum17 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The whole concept of the plot is so good. It kept me engaged because the entire time I was glued to the screen trying to think of why Julius is protecting Nicole. After everything he's going through and what she did, I found myself waiting for this epic declaration of love and heavy emotional scene where he comes to some sort of revelation but it never came. I was thinking surely it's coming and left so disappointed when the end of the film crept up on me. I had to check the time stamp because I was like WAIT, that's the end?!

The flashbacks throughout the experiment was a nice touch. I felt that the scenes were basic, just enough to properly establish Julius and Nicole's relationship and get the audience to empathize but I felt that they needed to be fleshed out more. I found them kind of hollow and hoped that more time and effort would be put into establishing their backgrounds. However, I did love the trippy scenes through his flashbacks where they were meshing with reality. But, I felt like they could have been utilized so much more to establish the psychological aspect I assume the film was going for.

There were so many things that had me absolutely puzzled and I found many loose ends or poorly explained elements of the plot that left me wanting. Like what is the point of the experiments? Is the surgeon performing them alone because he's insane or is he a hand in some corrupt organization? What is his villain arch, like why is he insane and dedicating his life to this cause? Why is Julius so loyal to Nicole? Why did Nicole cheat on Julius? Why does she save him and defend him like she loves him but she hasn't been in contact with him after they separated? DID JULIUS LIVE?

Overall, the concept is good and it made me cry for Julius, imagining how he could find the willpower to protect someone who had hurt him so badly. But, I felt like the execution could've been better. I would recommend because I'm absolutely in love with the concept, though.

The Inception of horror films! :D
imagorilla24 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had me very curious since it drew me in with the promise of a crazy woman torturing a lover. Although after finishing the movie, I realized the girl wasn't the one torturing the guy at all! SPOILER!

The film had so many twists and turns I barely knew what was going on half the time! It's a bit of a torture porn style horror with a love story mixed in and and ending that leaves you asking, "what the $#@!?"

I would however been happier if the film did in fact involve a girl doing the torturing rather than the guy, like I'd much rather see "Hardcandy 2 : Revenge of Ellen Paige" "this time with less of that weird stuff where she went too far!" that would be awesome Hollywood. Thanks!

All in all an excellent, well put together film complete with actors, lights, a camera AND a premise.

Great for the office party get together or high tea at grandma's.

disturbing and touching intelligent good movie
deadbull-9517125 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe cause I watched it in an exhausted not in a good mood, and was vulnerable and fell into it. The story and editing is better then the acting. It is an interesting semi hallucinatory situation about making impossible choices. The lack of gore was a relief to me because I was in no mood to see nice people being ripped apart in forensic detail today. But in this movie gore is always imminent, always, and the romance scenes are presented as hallucinatory flashbacks in the midst of a person being dismembered, a guy whose dismemberment is all that is preserving his lover's dismemberment...his choice....and the denouement, the final resolution works...It's definitely a horror movie when you realize what's really going on during these "romantic" moments, and in most low budget horror flicks .....the amateurs playing the victims are such wretched actors and actresses, and are deliberately unsympathetic, so we root for the sadist or demonic presence and the gore , excessive, graphic, and preposterous, is the balm, the release from the preceding and formulaic tension. . In this case, there was enough character development with the victims so that I made book on them and was satisfied with the resolution to the core premise. More gore would have weakened the movie because , as in the case of the ancient surgical practice of trepining, or any bloodletting, a motive of "cutter's" in mental hospitals is actually relief. It's the gore faucet that releases tension and ends that scene....but here you don't fully get that satisfaction and the violence is always hovering...the only relief is false, a victim so tortured that the sweet memories he has are really the result of an agony- wracked mind....and we know that , so there is really no release, just waves of tension and frustration, but that's if you let the movie work on you a little bit. This one is easy to be critical of, if you want, mainly because while the acting is good, I would not call it a virtuoso piece. It is original, I found it disturbing so it penetrates..........it is NOT 5 teenagers being chased through the woods by a deformed machete wielding nut job with the victims predictably being picked off one by one, each body containing about 500 litres of blood etc.....that is NOT what horror is about. Horror, to me anyhow, is about the individual you can relate to and sort of like, rendered helpless and being subjected to, as this movies sadist clarifies, the unspeakable. You get sucked into identification with the victim here, not the alpha monster avenging itself, the monster more sympathetic then the brats it picks off. I think it was Poe's "Premature Burial" where he he discusses the awe of true horror always made more terrible in the agony of the individual. More horrible to read about the unbelievable agonies of a specific person, then about 7000 people dying in an earthquake. Way to much thinking on this thing. But worth watching. I think it manages to do what it's designed to do effectively and creatively. Good Movie.
