Jaws Blu-Ray Review

31 August 2012 2:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Steven Spielberg

Starring: Roy Schneider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss

Running Time: 124 minutes

Certificate: 12

Extras: The Making Of Jaws, Deleted Scenes and Outtakes, The Shark Is Still Waiting: The Impact And Legacy Of Jaws, Jaws: The Restoration, From The Set, Jaws Archives, Theatrical Trailer

Classic, blockbuster, not about sharks: Jaws has been described as all of these things. To say anything about the film that hasn’t already been said is near impossible. It’s a mesmerising, tension filled, groundbreaking, leviathan of a movie, the first to gross over $100 million, and the original summer blockbuster. There will be no trudging of old ground in this review, as is the case with any restored classic the most important thing to ask is, is it worth it? Retailing at £22.99 in a lovely steelbook it’s a big ask, particularly in these harsh economic times. So here we go.

Jaws Blu-Ray Review

25 August 2012 9:21 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

In 1975 Steven Spielberg essentially created the summer blockbuster with his now timeless classic Jaws. The film has aged perfectly, with most of the tension still being as frightening today as it was all of those years ago. Universal has finally decided to bring the classic to Blu-Ray, with an all-new remastered video transfer and a 7.1 lossless audio track that will shake the floor and keep the terror coming at you from all points. Jaws is a must-own film and the Blu-Ray release is simply the best way to experience it.

The story of Jaws is fairly common in modern day. A gigantic shark terrorizes a local town during the 4th of July weekend. Local law enforcement tries their best to keep the killer fish at bay, while the rest of the town resorts to partying on the beach and in the unclear waters. Its horror 101 directed by a man who »

Blu-ray Review: Jaws

16 August 2012 11:52 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

The 1970s served up several films which had significant impacts on the world. There's no doubt Star Wars, The Godfather, and The Exorcist made a lasting impact on moviegoers across the globe. Another little film which probably caused many vacationing spots near the oceans to lose business in the summer of 1975 was Jaws

I still remember the horrified look on my mother's face when she picked me up from my grandparent's house the night she saw it. Her beet-red face and fearful eyes made an instant impact I can still remember 37 years later.

Thanks to Universal Studios Home Entertainment, everyone can now enjoy Jaws in high-definition glory. It's digitally remastered and fully restored from the original high resolution 35mm film elements. The Jaws 2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack is the classic film like you've never seen it before.

I thought the remastered version they did back for the movie's »

Blu-ray Review: Restored ‘Jaws’ Gives Your Blu-ray Player Purpose

14 August 2012 2:11 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – I’ve long argued that the main reason that Blu-ray sales didn’t instantly take off like purists argued that they should have was because too many people’s favorite movies weren’t even available on the format. Universal has gone a long way to fixing that problem in 2012 through their 100th Anniversary line of Blu-ray releases and today sees the company unveiling for the public what is unquestionably the Blu-ray of the year. “Jaws” is back, digitally restored in a way that’s truly difficult to put into words. You need to see it. You need to own it. Or your Blu-ray player isn’t doing its job.

Rating: 5.0/5.0

As for the movie itself, there are some films that I adore for which I’m open to debate or discussion about their potential flaws. “Jaws” is not one of them. The movie is Perfect. It’s one of »

Jaws | Blu-ray Review

14 August 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Jaws. The first summer blockbuster. The first film to reap the benefits of a massive 400 theater opening weekend release. The first film to really set television into action as a home invading movie advertisement machine. The film that proved Steven Spielberg to be a true craftsmen at the helm of a major studio funded motion feature. The film that inadvertently closed the curtain on an era of unfathomable creative freedom by proving you could make insane amounts of money if a film can be marketed to every living person on the planet. And though in its wake major studio film culture has become synonymous with cheap popcorn thrills and overblown studio expenditures, Jaws remains a classic not just for how it changed the film industry, but because it is an exquisitely made monster movie that tapped into universal human fears and did so with iconic style.

Exclusive Video Interview: Production Designer Joe Alves Reflects on the Challenges and Triumphs of Jaws

8 August 2012 2:32 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Back in 1974 when production was first gearing up for Universal Studios' Jaws, Joe Alves knew that while the challenges they were facing to bring Peter Benchley's novel to the big screen were going to be huge, the rewards would be worth it.

That is, if they could survive their almost 160 day shooting schedule.

But of course Alves was right; Jaws went on to become the movie that launched the summer blockbuster and despite the passing of almost 40 years since its initial release, the Steven Spielberg-classic still remains one of the best and most critically-acclaimed movies ever made that has become the measuring stick for countless filmmakers out there who have stated it’s the one film that made them realize anything was possible once you step behind the camera.

Recently, Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Alves during the recent Jaws Blu-Ray press day held »
