Two of the close-ups in the film were shot using an iPhone 5. Director Catherine Hardwicke felt it allowed for more intimacy than the use of a regular movie camera.
Jennifer Aniston was originally cast but after the project was delayed, she dropped out and Rachel Weisz was cast. Weisz also dropped out and Drew Barrymore replaced her.
Tyson Ritter (Ace) was so inspired by Toni Collette's performance as Milly he wrote "There's A Place," which is also featured in the movie during a scene the two share.

When Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette's characters are first talking about the latter's cancer diagnosis and her becoming bald; Drew Barrymore's character says that being bald is common and Toni Collette's character responds by saying that it is normal for men, babies and ET.
