Weird Loners Review – TV Fox

Weird Loners is a tough sell, and though it could become a hit, it has a massive uphill battle in front of it. The main problem, ratings-wise, is that it has too much in common with all the shows that didn’t work for its stars in the past.

Of course, that’s only if you’re looking for ratings.

The shows in question, Zachary Knighton‘s Happy Endings, and Becki Newton‘s The Goodwin Games, were actually great shows, but Weird Loners has a tone, and general style of comedy, that is something of a cross between those shows, and that’s a ratings nightmare.

Worse, the pilot is somewhat nonsensical, having to put forward our establishing excuse that the four main characters get together. It has its moments, but it has to try so hard to force these people together, that it has little time to let them charm us.

NBA Finals on ABC Hits 2014 High, Tops Other Nets Combined

NBA Finals on ABC Hits 2014 High, Tops Other Nets Combined
Another surprising blowout victory by the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 has produced the top preliminary ratings result for the 2014 NBA Finals, with ABC beating its rivals combined on Thursday. NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” remained the top original entertainment series on the night, but fell off opposite the big game, while the net’s comedy “Undateable” held up a bit better.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, ABC’s stations averaged a 5.2 rating/17 share in adults 18-49 and 12.8 million viewers overall from 9 to 11 p.m., with these numbers expected to rise by more than 10% when the game’s full duration and West Coast viewing are included. In the 9-11 p.m. window, ABC beat its combined CBS-nbc-Fox competition in 18-49 (5.2 to 3.9) and total viewers (12.8 million vs. 11.4 million).

In Nielsen’s metered-market overnights, the NBA Finals on Thursday averaged a 10.6 household rating — ahead of Games 1 (10.4), 2 (10.2) and 3 (10.3). The broadcast peaked

Becki Newton will star in Fox's 'Weird Loners' pilot

Fox's comedy pilot "Weird Loners" has one of the standout titles of this development season, and its cast is shaping up to be pretty strong as well.

Becki Newton has signed on to play one of the title characters in the pilot, which comes from writer Michael Weithorn (creator of "The King of Queens") and director Jake Kasdan ("New Girl," "Freaks and Geeks"). It's about four social misfits who form a bond with one another via living in the same townhouse in Queens.

Newton's character, Caryn, is a "high-strung" dental hygienist with a tendency to go all-in on relationships way too quickly. Her co-stars thus far are "Happy Endings" alum Zachary Knighton and Nate Torrence ("Hello Ladies," "Super Fun Night"); the fourth member of the core group has yet to be cast.

Newton last starred in "The Goodwin Games" for Fox. Prior to that, she was a regular on "Ugly Betty

The Ugly Betty and How I Met Your Mother alumna is with UTA, Management 360 and Smgsb. Weithorn and Kasdan exec produce Weird Loners with Kasdan’s producing partner Melvin Mar.

The Office actor joins Cate Blanchett film Carol

The Office actor joins Cate Blanchett film Carol
Jake Lacy has joined the cast of Todd Haynes's Carol.

The Office actor will star opposite Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in the upcoming adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Price of Salt.

I'm Not There filmmaker Haynes will direct the 1950s-set project, which focuses on a young woman (Mara) in New York who finds herself obsessed with another woman (Blanchett) after meeting in a store.

Lacy will play Mara's character's boyfriend Richard in the film.

The Price of Salt was originally published back in 1952 under Highsmith's pseudonym. It was notorious at the time due to its lesbian storyline that moved away from stereotypical homosexual characters.

Jake Lacy recently starred in the comedy film Obvious Child, while he also featured in the pilot of Fox sitcom The Goodwin Games, before being replaced by Tj Miller.

Rupert Grint's rejected 'Super Clyde' is now online: Wish CBS had picked up this pilot?

Rupert Grint's rejected 'Super Clyde' is now online: Wish CBS had picked up this pilot?
Here’s why CBS ultimately rejected the high-concept comedy Super Clyde, according to EW’s own James Hibberd: It “was deemed off-brand for the network and the net’s other comedies came in strong. Plus, successful comedy blocks are about creating flow, and there was also nothing compatible that CBS had to pair it with.”

That reasoning is understandable, if disappointing for fans of ex-Harry Potter star Rupert Grint. But after watching the pilot for Super Clyde — available now on CBS.com — I can’t help but wish I had a time-turner, which I’d use to travel back and
