For scheduling reasons, Julia Roberts and George Clooney didn't work together a lot in the movie. Roberts shot all of her scenes with green screen on the monitors her character constantly watches.
The screenplay for this film was featured in the 2014 Blacklist, a list of the "most liked" unmade scripts of the year.
When Patty is in the van with the computer tech, they try to figure out what "Mambo" might mean. While searching online, the tech suggests "Mambo Italiano", a song by George Clooney's aunt, Rosemary Clooney.
George Clooney suggested Julia Roberts for the female lead.
George Clooney has become a fan of Jack O'Connell's hometown football team, Derby County.
The video game that the Icelanders are playing throughout the film is Just Cause 3 (2015).
Director Jodie Foster was considered for Julia Roberts' roles in Pretty Woman (1990) and Conspiracy Theory (1997). Conspiracy Theory would have reunited her with Mel Gibson and Richard Donner, whom she worked with on Maverick (1994).

Jodie Foster was originally supposed to play opposite George Clooney in The Peacemaker (1997).
This marks the second time George Clooney has played a movie character with the surname Gates. He previously played Archie Gates in the movie "Three Kings" (1999).

One of the reporters at the end is named Terry Benedict, a character name from the "Ocean's" movies which also star George Clooney and Julia Roberts.
The original draft of the screenplay didn't have Kyle killed at the end, only arrested and made into an urban hero, but when Jodie Foster signed up to the project she requested the character to die because it would be more believable, since actions have consequences and Kyle 's actions could not be praised.
