While Pam's story arc begins all the way back in Season 1, it's this season that we begin to see her change and finally learn to embrace living life outside of her comfort zone. She professes that she loves her "boring" life. What she's really saying is that she loves her "safe" life.
Pam has always had problems seizing the initiative and pursuing her passions and dreams. Jim tells her way back in Season 2, "You've got to take a chance on something sometime." Of course, she gets defensive, mostly because subconsciously, she knows he's right. She nearly lost Jim because she decided to take the safe road with Roy rather than take a chance on what she really wanted. Pam loves her comfort zone. Many people do.
Interesting thing about a comfort zone is that it can be a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there. In short, Pam loves her bubble world where she never has to challenge herself and take risks in life. Jim, however, is the opposite. And perhaps that is one of the many reasons why they are so good for each other.
Pam finds herself facing her own complacency in this episode when she becomes concerned that she and Jim know everything about each other. Anytime you face this problem in life, it's when you need to challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone. True progress is never made without risk.
While there is much growth and evolvement in this final season, it can easily be argued that it is Pam who sees the most growth by the end of it, even sharing a beautiful speech in the final episode about how much time she feels she's wasted over the years by not following her dreams and passions. However, in this second episode, we begin the final stage of Pam's journey, which will be filled with bumps, bruises, and challenges. True growth is impossible without these things. But when you come out the other side, you can look back and smile at the amount of growth and progress that you've made. And by the time the series ends, we find ourselves cheering for Pam because she takes a lot of hits along the way, but she keeps getting back up, which is why she succeeds.
