Storyline

Starting where The Sid Saga Part 1 (1985) leaves off, Sid Laverents continues to tell his life story. It's now 1927, Sid is nineteen years old, and is trying to make a career in vaudeville with his twenty-four year old girlfriend, Sue, in a novelty act, which on his side is his one-man band. Although they would get married a year later, they billed their act as a brother/sister one. They wanted to make it big in New York, but hit the theaters there, in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, and everywhere else in-between. They realized they had to travel to make a living since their act was a novelty one that would wear thin in one place. A natural disaster during one stint in Elba, Alabama not only threatened to wipe out their act, but to wipe them out literally. The advent of the talkies and the Great Depression would kibosh their vaudeville career. Taking odd jobs, both on and off the stage, over the next ten years would take its toll, and lead in part to the end of the marriage.... Written by Huggo

The Sid Saga Part 2 (1987)

*** (out of 4)

Filmmaker Sid Laverents made THE SID SAGA over the course of a few years and after it was completed he would revisit the project and add bits and pieces. It's really hard to judge a film like this because on one hand you have to admire the man for wanting to get his history down on film. There's no question that this is a pretty well made feature but at the same time you have to ask yourself if you really want to know about the life of Sid Laverents and spend so much time with what's basically a mix between a bio pic and home movies.

THE SID SAGA PART 2 picks up as Sid continues touring his "One Man Band" act with his new lady. Before long he's going throughout the country and tells a rather harrowing tale of barely escaping a flood. From here we hear about the various tours, which leads to his time in the Army.

This second part of the series deals with much of the same stuff over and over. The non-stop touring gets the majority of the running time and I think it would have been a bit more interesting had we gotten a few more stories about life on the road. Instead of that we're basically just told about various stops and in reality we don't learn too much. The film starts to pick up once Sid heads overseas and throughout all of it we get various newspaper clippings, photos and at times some home movies.

Again, it's hard to recommend this film to just anyone. If you're interested in Sid then obviously this is going to be something you'll want to see. For me, the filmmaking is good enough to where you can't help take notice and I think for the most part it remains interesting, although as the two parts hit the hour mark, it is starting to feel long.
