Poet, conservationist... William Merwin. The documentary opens by listing the awards that Merwin has won. A longtime resident of maui, hawaii, Merwin rejoices in planting trees that rejuvenate and continues doing good things for the planet. Beginning as the son of a minister, Merwin had a very strict childhood... not being allowed to mingle with the other children, or to go all the places they went. Off to Princeton, off to France. He observed the farmers beating the wheat stalks to get the grains off, and then later mourned when the thrasher machines did all that automatically. Merwin later wrote about the Vietnam war, and about the journeys that he and we take in life. A simple, thoughtful guy, Merwin is the very definition of the poet, taking in his observations and creating the poetry to express what what has seen. As of today, he is still with us.. also as of today, you can click on the database to view the collection of palm trees on his conservancy property.. A very interesting watch. Available on DVD. Directed by Stefan Schaefer, who had also directed "My Last Day Without You".
