After a pretty decent season finale, we are treated to a truly dreadful season premiere. And the really frustrating thing is it feels like there's a much better episode in there somewhere trying to get out.The fact that the focus is on whether Charlie survives or not, with more interesting plot lines like Sid being on an assault charge shunted to one side or wholly absent, doesn't help but Rebecca Breeds is on top form and the scenes of Ruby, Leah and Casey worrying about their friend really do engender sympathy.
Unfortunately, in the midst of all this we get some dull material of Brax tracking down Charlie's attacker, with pointless violence and half the audience begging for Jake to shoot him. This is practically anti-drama and only succeeds in making Brax less and less sympathetic, along with the later scene where he adds to Ruby's pain by refusing to accept what has happened. The episode is so out of focus it's hard to even tell when we find out Charlie's dead:One minute Sid's saying they don't know how long her brain's been starved off oxygen, the next he's asking Ruby when she wants to turn off the life support. With writing that poor, it's very hard for the audience to get involved.
