Storyline

As soon as Darryl learns Charlie must have been shot by Jake Pirovic, he realizes to be the next target, leaves Casey by her sickbed, rushes home and cleverly disarms the fiend, whom he keeps chasing until constable Patrick Avery arrives to perform the arrest and stop Darryl from inflicting serious harm. Sid meanwhile operated but declares the oxygen caused irreparable brain damage, so he advises next of kin Ruby to have her taken off life support, which Darryl opposes ferociously. Meeting his patched-up abuse victim Stu and his brute father Alan Henderson in hospital, Sid starts realizing the boy's violent moments must stem from horrible paternal example. "Remember the pain"
13 February 2012 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

After a pretty decent season finale, we are treated to a truly dreadful season premiere. And the really frustrating thing is it feels like there's a much better episode in there somewhere trying to get out.The fact that the focus is on whether Charlie survives or not, with more interesting plot lines like Sid being on an assault charge shunted to one side or wholly absent, doesn't help but Rebecca Breeds is on top form and the scenes of Ruby, Leah and Casey worrying about their friend really do engender sympathy.

Unfortunately, in the midst of all this we get some dull material of Brax tracking down Charlie's attacker, with pointless violence and half the audience begging for Jake to shoot him. This is practically anti-drama and only succeeds in making Brax less and less sympathetic, along with the later scene where he adds to Ruby's pain by refusing to accept what has happened. The episode is so out of focus it's hard to even tell when we find out Charlie's dead:One minute Sid's saying they don't know how long her brain's been starved off oxygen, the next he's asking Ruby when she wants to turn off the life support. With writing that poor, it's very hard for the audience to get involved.
