Sierra/Affinity Goes Beyond Sales With Movies Like ‘Atomic Blonde’

Sierra/Affinity Goes Beyond Sales With Movies Like ‘Atomic Blonde’
Producing and financing films, rather than just taking a fee to sell them, has always been an important part of Sierra/Affinity’s blueprint since the company launched in 2009. Nevertheless, it took several years for the company’s ambitions beyond sales to be fully realized.

The company has produced and financed several titles over the past couple of years and is pushing hard in that direction. As company founder Nick Meyer, who is being honored at Cannes with Variety‘s Achievement in International Film Award, sees it, “a key part of our growth as a company is that we are a production entity.”

Set for release this July via Focus Features is “Atomic Blonde,” the graphic-novel adaptation starring Charlize Theron and James McAvoy. Recent titles also produced and financed by Sierra include the critically hailed “Lost City of Z” by director James Gray, 1960s melodrama “A Kind of Murder,” John Hillcoat

Fox Developing Horror Series ‘Haunted’ from ‘The Devil Inside’ Helmer

Fox Developing Horror Series ‘Haunted’ from ‘The Devil Inside’ Helmer
Fox is tapping into the popular horror genre with a script order for “Haunted,” a hourlong drama from horror film writer/director Brent Bell, Variety has learned.

Bell — who wrote and directed the 2012 flick “The Devil Inside” — will serve as writer on the project, and is attached to direct should a formal pilot order land. Chris Morgan and Ainsley Davies will also exec produce, and Lisa Arianna will serve as a producer.

Inspired by Bob Cramner’s book, “The Demon of Brownsville Road,” which is based on the author’s self-proclaimed true story, “Haunted” is about a military agent who is partnered with her ex-boyfriend, now a rogue demonologist, to help a family overcome a deadly demonic infestation of their home. Per Fox’s logline, the season-long case investigates the true story of one the most haunted houses in America. At its core, the potential series will explore the age-old question: is evil real?

DVD Review – Howl (2015)

Howl, 2015.

Directed by Paul Hyett.

Starring Ed Speleers, Holly Weston, Elliot Cowan, Amit Shah, Sam Gittins, Duncan Preston, Sean Pertwee and Rosie Day.

Synopsis:

A train full of passengers must band together to fight off a pack of bloodthirsty wolf-like creatures.

Two new werewolf movies released in the same month? Must be close to Halloween. But while William Brent Bell’s Wer is an intelligent twist on the werewolf legend, Paul Hyett’s Howl goes for a more traditional approach. Not that there’s anything wrong with traditional because after seeing so many filmmakers try something new with the formula over the past few years it’s actually quite refreshing to have a new film that goes back to basics and doesn’t try to be anything other than a creepily good time.

There are two main positives that work in Howl’s favour, namely relatable (but not necessarily likeable

Wer Review

A “found footage” horror movie about werewolves? From the guys behind The Devil Inside? Bear with me, I promise there’s a light at the end of this topsy-turvy tunnel.

Where The Exorcism Of Emily Rose attempts to weigh demonic possession against mental illness, Wer calls upon the same judicial storytelling by putting a suspected werewolf on trial in hopes of proving innocence through physical ailments. Playing out like a faux-documentary, most of the film is spent watching a sassy lawyer defender her furry client, condemning a case riddled with inconsequential evidence that only the worst investigation could slum together, but a shockingly invigorated third act changes at the rising of a full moon. Writer/Director William Brent Bell and co-writer Matthew Peterman’s previous film, The Devil Inside, crumbles under the weight of vapid storytelling and an absolutely insulting ending, but these rejuvenated artists refuse to wander the same joyless road a second time.
