Modern Family Casts Gloria's Mother, Sister

Modern Family will soon introduce a baby for Jay and Gloria. But that's not the only member of this family viewers are scheduled to meet.

The ABC sitcom announced today that Elizabeth Pena (La Bamba, Rush Hour) has been cast as Gloria's mother and Stephanie Beatriz (The Closer, The Smart One) as Sofia, Gloria’s sister.

Both relatives will appear on the 12th episode of Modern Family Season 4, making it very likely their daughter/sibling will have given birth by then and they are in town to meet the tyke. Early congratulations to all!

Elizabeth Peña (La Bamba, Rush Hour) has been tapped to play Pilar, mother to Sofia Vergara’s Gloria, TVLine has learned.

Additionally, Stephanie Beatriz has been cast as Sofia, Gloria’s sister.

They will both appear in this season’s 12th episode, “Fulgencio,” which begins shooting on Monday.

The pair are likely around for a visit related to Gloria’s pregnancy — maybe a baby shower? Perhaps the blessed event itself?

NBC is back in business with Ellen DeGeneres, buying a single-camera comedy from her company, A Very Good Production, and Warner Bros. TV. The untitled project is being written by Lauren Pomerantz, senior writer for Degeneres’ syndicated daytime talk show. The two are exec producing. The comedy centers on a successful, proudly independent 32-year-old woman who is convinced she just doomed herself to die alone when she notices she’s listed as “a single woman” on the paperwork for the house she’s about to close on. Phylicia Rashad Joins NBC Drama

Phylicia Rashad is returning to TV. The "Cosby Show" star has signed on to appear in NBC's "Do No Harm," according to TV Guide. In the show -- a modern day take on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde -- Rashad will play Dr. Vanessa Young, the chief of surgery and boss to the show's main character Dr. Jeffrey Kohl.

Steven Pasquale plays Dr. Kohl, a neurosurgeon who has a dangerous alter ego he previously could keep in check with medicine. TV Guide describes Rashad's character as Dr. Kohl's greatest champion who "calls things like she sees them." Alana De La Garza of "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: La" fame is also scheduled to star in the medical drama.
