‘Miss Bala’: Catherine Hardwicke Set to Helm English-Language Remake of Beauty Pageant-Set Thriller

“Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke is set to helm the Sony remake of “Miss Bala,” as reported by Deadline. According to the site, “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez is the front-runner to topline the film about a beauty pageant contestant who witnesses various drug-related crimes and is dragged into the gang’s dangerous business.

The original drama premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. and was Mexico’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the 84th Academy Awards. It was directed by Mexican filmmaker Gerardo Naranjo, who also co-wrote it alongside Mauricio Katz. “Spectre” actress Stephanie Sigman starred as the lead role.

Catherine Hardwicke to Direct ‘Miss Bala’ Remake for Sony

“Twilight” helmer Catherine Hardwicke has been tapped by Sony Pictures to direct its remake of “Miss Bala,” sources confirmed to Variety.

The film is an adaptation of the Mexican entry for best foreign-language film at the 84th Academy Awards in 2011. It centers on a woman named Laura Guerrero who, along with her friend, enters a Miss Baja beauty pageant. She witnesses during rehearsals a gang killing Drug Enforcement Administration agents and nightclub-goers, which turns her life upside down. She’s then kidnapped by the men and forced to work for them in the deadly drug war.
