The original intro of Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Ah, Atlantis. In some ways, a rather unusual work for Disney, deviating from their usual musical fairytale formula in favor a of steampunk pulp adventure.

Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, directors of Beauty and Beast and The Hunchback of Notre Dame) attempted here a more mature work for the studio here, which unfortunately wasn't very well received by the public during the time of its release.

I do remember a lot of reviewers commented on how "Un-Disney" the movie was due its violence and "suggestive" content (Very tamed in reality, but a bit riskier than the usual Disney stuff; I guess if this had been a movie by Dreamworks probably the reaction wouldn't have been the same) The animation was also negatively criticized, being seen inferior to the previous Disney Renaissance films.

While I do have to agree it was a somewhat flawed film (mostly due the annoying "Whedonism" which permeate the film, filling the dialogue with lots of bad jokes) it was nice to see Disney venturing into a more serious, ambitious work.

This was the original intro of that movie, already setting its edgier tone. It was ultimately replaced in favor of giving an earlier introduction to the Atlanteans, apparently to making them more "relatable" to the audiences.

Narratively wise, I guess this change was for the best, but I still liked this Viking prologue anyway.

A shame Disney has basically given up on traditional animation nowadays. The immense success the first Shrek movie marked the beginning of the end for the old-school Disney in favor of a new CGI era.

And the studio has never been the same since.
