At Viacom, Chris McCarthy Adds MTV to Growing Portfolio

Chris McCarthy has been given oversight of MTV along with his current supervision of VH1 and Logo, Viacom said Monday, adding to the executive’s portfolio at a time when the New York entertainment conglomerate is under severe pressure to make many of its TV outlets more relevant to a younger generation that has embraced mobile devices and streaming video.

McCarthy takes up duties very recently held by Sean Atkins, who was named MTV’s president at the end of September in 2015. Atkins had focused on a re-launch of MTV News, a renewed emphasis on music and the launch of shows that mixed edgy subjects and millennial humor. One program readied under his aegis, “Sweet/Vicious,” touches upon rape culture and sexual harassment while focusing on two women at a college who take up campus vigilantism. It is set to debut in mid-November.

Despite the new attention paid to what has become a flagging pop-culture brand, the

She’s surprised by a sudden proposal and subsequent ultimatum from her easy-going boyfriend, which leads to a solo trip to Rome to shed her inhibitions. However, reality catches up to her as her journey proves a lot bumpier than the idyllic “Eat Pray Love” trip she’d envisioned.

“We were drawn to Sasha’s fresh take on the romantic comedy,” said Melanie Miller at Samuel Goldwyn Films. “Festival goers have embraced the film and we can’t wait to bring it to a wider audience.”

10 Sitcom Pilots Inspired by Real People: Which Will You Watch?

Last week, in the wake of Eddie Huang's complaints that he felt ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat" was distorting and softening his childhood experiences, this column examined how hard it is for any biographical or autobiographical sitcom to be true to the life of its source and still be a crowd-pleasing primetime network entertainment. You'd think, after decades of trying, TV writers and network programming executives would be aware of this.

Nonetheless, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the networks have no fewer than ten such sitcom pilots in production, as the first episodes of potential 2015-16 primetime series. Some are based on the lives of already famous entertainers, some on the self-referential stand-up comedy routines of not-quite-famous comics, and some on memoirsts who've lived interesting lives.

Here's a rundown of these pilots, with a look at who these shows are about, who's starring in them, what the series might be like,
