Variety has chosen its 10 Comics to Watch for 2016.
The series recognizes standups, sketch artists and Web content creators, who will be honored at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal in July.
Selected by a team of Variety editors based on extensive polling of the professional comedy community — those who scout, book, represent, produce and cast comics on a daily basis — the group will be profiled in the July 19 issue of Variety and honored at the festival with a cocktail party on July 28, followed by a panel and showcase on July 29.
Past honorees on the list include Jenny Slate (“Obvious Child”), Amy Schumer (“Trainwreck”), T.J. Miller (“Silicon Valley”) and Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect 2”). The list began in 2000 with such now-prominent names as Maria Bamford, Louis C.K., Zach Galifianakis and Patton Oswalt.

VH1 and Logo TV General Manager Chris McCarthy has been promoted to President of the two Viacom networks, it was announced Wednesday. He’ll continue to be based in New York, reporting to Doug Herzog, President of the Viacom Music & Entertainment Group.
“Within a remarkably short time, Chris has driven record growth across all screens and done an incredible job of reinventing the VH1 brand, bringing the focus back to its rich pop culture heritage,” said Herzog. “Chris is a smart and strategic leader who thinks from an ‘audience first’ perspective, leading to highly impressive results.”
Prior to being named General Manager of VH1, McCarthy was the Gm of MTV’s digital networks from 2010 to 2016, where he oversaw Logo TV, MTV2 and Mtvu. Get ready for a ton of mic-drops: TruTV has greenlit a new comedy competition series, “Comedy Knockout,” TheWrap has learned. The Damien Lemon-hosted show pits comedians against each other in a series of fast-paced challenges and gives the audience sole discretion to decide who is the funniest person in the room. In each episode, the “Guy Code” alum will send three comics into battle. With points doled out based on the audience’s applause, it’s all about one-upmanship as competitors attempt to land massive comedy blows and whip the rowdy crowd into a frenzy of raucous laughter, per the Turner cable channel. »
