'Once the couple gets together, the tension is lost': how sitcom romance died

19 June 2017 1:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

TV is breaking up with cutesy romcoms such as The Mindy Project and New Girl. Why? Because viewers wants to see modern love in all its volatile reality

Related: Catastrophe review: a poignant finale full of tenderness and humour

It’s not going to come as a big surprise to anyone in 2017, but romance is dead. And nowhere is that spelled out more clearly than on TV. Recently it was announced that the cutesy love-in-a-flatshare sitcom New Girl’s seventh series would be the last, with a mere eight episodes compared to its previous 22-episode runs. Similarly, The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling’s homage to 90s romcoms, is about to begin filming its final, sixth series, with creator Kaling saying: “I think the timing is exactly right.” Does the ending of these shows point to the end of the TV romcom?

Band Aid – Review

15 June 2017 6:31 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

With respect to those most Righteous of Brothers, this new film could’ve been title, “They’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin””. Yes, it’s an “anti-rom-com.”. It covers what happens long after the “meet cute”, the “mis-communications”, and the “reconciliations after the misunderstandings” that lead right to the fade-out proposal or nuptials (or both). These two have definitely “hit the skids”, but instead of “turning into said skid”, they take an unusual detour. Rather than undergoing major marriage “surgery”, like a gold band extraction, they believe that the way to heal old emotional may only require a simple Band Aid.

Married thirty-somethings (er…late thirty-somethings) Anna (Zoe Lister-Jones) and Ben (Adam Pally) seem to be stuck into a deep, deep, rut. A failed writer, Anna earns a buck now by being a Uber driver (cue the montage of zany, obnoxious passengers), while Ben designs company logos and corporate art from home on his laptop (ah, »

'The Mindy Project' Final Season: Mindy Kaling Previews "Satisfying" Farewell

7 June 2017 7:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

The Mindy Project dropped not one but two bombshells when it unveiled its season-five finale in March.

Onscreen came the surprise that Mindy (series creator and star Mindy Kaling) had eloped with beau Ben (Bryan Greenberg) — a decision she appeared ambivalent about, to say the least, as she looked out the subway window in the final moments of the episode.

The following day came the surprising offscreen news that the show had been renewed for its sixth and final season.

Those major changes ahead have only added to the creative process behind the scenes at the half-hour comedy, which »

Niecy Nash: 'They want you to be the sassy neighbor or the sassy friend'

6 June 2017 3:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Emmy-nominated star of Getting On and Scream Queens discusses her leading role in Claws and how she’s fought Hollywood’s obsession with stereotypes

“It’s quite the undertaking,” Niecy Nash tells me over the phone, sweltering in the Louisiana heat.

The Emmy-nominated actor is hardly work-shy, having become slowly ubiquitous on the small screen, but her new show offers her a role she hasn’t yet had the chance, or time, to master: the lead. Nash has worked her way up from stealing scenes in The Mindy Project, Masters of Sex, Scream Queens and Getting On to headline the major new series Claws. It’s not an achievement to be sniffed at for any actor, but for a 47-year-old woman of color it’s a miracle.

Great Job, Internet!: Read This: Rom-coms’ changing attitudes toward interracial relationships

5 June 2017 2:03 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Nobody’s turning to romantic comedies for an exploration of progressive ideals or experiments with the cinematic form. Rather, rom-coms tend to serve as a symbol of any given generation’s sentimental ideals while also exuding a normality in terms of both personality and desire to encourage self-identification among its audience. In other words, they cast a wide net. That so many forthcoming rom-coms center around interracial relationships is an affirming thing, as it shows an effort on Hollywood’s part to tell love stories about diverse characters without their relationships having to hinge on racial issues.

We’ve been seeing this phenomenon unfold on TV for a while now. Shows like Master Of None, The Mindy Project, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend have all had their fair share. Now, in a new piece for The Guardian, writer Ellen E. Jones details about how we’re seeing this trend manifest on film »
