The New Mutants Will Be ‘A Full-Fledged Horror Movie,’ Says Director Josh Boone

  • LRM Online
Color us surprised. Some time ago, The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone came on board the X-Men Universe film, The New Mutants. Admittedly, with X-Men: Apocalypse leaving off with our main crew so young, it almost felt pointless to have a Ya-type New Mutants spinoff. How would this movie actually help to differentiate itself from the movie we just saw?

Well, it turns out that The New Mutants will likely be a lot different than any of us had expected. Given the statements from Boone in the past regarding the story — as well as his dealing with angsty teen films like The Fault in Our Stars and Stuck in Love — we expected them to really buckle down on the Ya aspect. However, speaking with EW, the filmmaker revealed that they’d be going more in an unexpected direction:

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe.

The New Mutants Begins Pre-Production

  • LRM Online
The X-Men franchise is certainly in a phase of rapid growth. After resting firmly on its main line of films for the last fifteen years, over the past year or so, they’ve made deliberate attempts to reach beyond it. Yes, they had the Wolverine films, but last year, they expanded beyond Wolverine with Deadpool, and very soon, they’ll also be introducing The New Mutants through a new, Ya-ish film from The Fault in Our Stars director, Josh Boone.

It’s been just south of two years since Boone was attached to the film, and Boone has been keeping us along the ride for some time now through his social media. We’ve seen pictures of his first drafts, and we’ve since also seen those go through rewrites, which included reuniting with the writers behind The Fault in Our Stars. But to be honest, it’s been a

X-Men: Here Is Every Film Currently In Development

  • LRM Online
The X-Men Cinematic Universe is definitely a unique beast among the superhero universes. Marvel Studios pioneered the idea of shared universes, and since 2008, things have been relatively straightforward in that world. The same could be said of the DC Extended Universe. While the future of the film franchise is still getting shuffled around after Justice League, the actual narrative structure of the movies are easy enough to follow.

The same can not be said of the X-Men films. While the first three films were simple sequels to one another, things were first thrown out of wack with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Things got more convoluted when X-Men: Days of Future Past attempted to merge the timelines, but only more questions came as a result. Several films later, we now have a whole new era of X-Men films on the horizon, and they all occur at potentially different points in time.

Stephen King’s Revival: Russell Crowe Cast, Director Josh Boone On Writing Process Compared To New Mutants

  • LRM Online
It certainly feels like we’re living in an impending Stephen King resurgence on the big screen. The for the past several decades, King has been quickly churning out bestseller after bestseller, and in that time, some of his most passionate readers have grown into talented storytellers of their own. Such is the case with writer/director Josh Boone, the man behind such movies as Stuck in Love and The Fault in Our Stars, who has proven to the quite the Stephen King fanatic. Seriously, one of the characters in Stuck in Love is obsessed with King, and King himself even has a vocal cameo in the flick.

As such, it made sense when Boone was attached to such films as The Stand and Lisey’s Story. One of the more recent King-related projects Boone’s been attached to, however is an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel Revival.

Speaking with Creative Screenwriting,

The New Mutants: Director Josh Boone’s Pitch To Fox Included A Comic Book

  • LRM Online
Perhaps one of today’s rising stars in the world of filmmaking is writer/director Josh Boone. As of right now, Boone only has three credits to his name: Stuck in Love, The Fault in Our Stars, and All We Had (for which Boone only received screenplay credit). Of those three, only one has received a certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and yet on the heels of The Fault in Our Stars, Boone managed to leverage his success and attach himself to many high profile projects including three Stephen King projects (The Stand, Revival, Lisey’s Story), an adaptation of The Vampire Chronicles, and finally, X-Men: The New Mutants.

Given the filmmakers hit-or-miss track record thus far, it’s hard to say whether or not we can expect great things from this X-Men spinoff, but if nothing else, he’s a filmmaker with real enthusiasm and an even more
