The film shares many similarities to Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition (2002); a longtime, trusted hitman (Tom Hanks, Liam Neeson) is put at odds with their boss (Paul Newman, Ed Harris) when their sons make things personal (Daniel Craig, Boyd Holbrook) and target their own children (Tyler Hoechlin, Joel Kinnaman). As a result, a master assassin (Jude Law, Common) is dispatched to get rid of them. Both films also conclude at a family cabin.
Listed among the cast when the film was in production, Nick Nolte had much of his material cut from the final release. As such, he is uncredited for his brief appearance.
Liam Neeson has two sons in real life named Micháel and Daniel (Danny), which are the names of the two boys in the film Run All Night
At one point during a street chase, Jimmy (Liam Neeson), runs past a billboard for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). That film was also produced by the same studio (Warner Bros.), was scored by the same composer (Junkie XL), and the trailer for the film was attached to all release copies of this film.

In the trailer, "Danny Boy" is played. Liam Neeson sang "Danny Boy" in The Lego Movie (2014).
The car that Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) drives, is the same type of car that Patrick Swayze's character Truman Gates drives, in Next of Kin (1989). It was also a movie, in which Neeson starred, playing Swayze's brother.
Ed Harris' character is shown near a framed sports jersey with the number 94, honoring the Rangers Stanley Cup Championship during the 1993-1994 season.
This film opened in theaters on March 13, 2015, which was cast member Common's 43rd birthday.

Joel Kinnaman and Liam Neeson have both starred in a DC Comic Book movie featuring Batman. Joel Kinnaman starred as Rick Flag in Suicide Squad (2016), but doesn't share any scenes with Batman. Liam Neeson starred as Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins (2005) and has a major role in the film, first as a type of mentor, and then later enemy. Common also had a small role as Monster T in Suicide Squad (2016). He also does not share any scenes with Batman, but shares a scene with Batman's most notable enemy, The Joker. Joel Kinnaman's character shares scenes with the Batman villains, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc.

Mike tells Eddie that Roy DeMeo's boys killed Billy. Roy DeMeo was a real hitman for the Gambino family, in charge of his own crew. Ironically Roy DeMeo was murdered by his own crew at mob boss Paul Castellano's orders.
Warning: contains spoiler for Enemy at the Gates (2001)) Marks the second time a character played by Ed Harris is killed next to a rail track, the other being Enemy at the Gates.
Despite being one of the top billed, Common's character Price doesn't show up until the last 50 minutes of the movie.
