The film shares many similarities to Sam Mendes's Road to Perdition (2002); a longtime, trusted hitman (Tom Hanks, Liam Neeson) is put at odds with their boss (Paul Newman, Ed Harris) when their sons make things personal (Daniel Craig, Boyd Holbrook) and target their own children (Tyler Hoechlin, Joel Kinnaman). As a result, a master assassin (Jude Law, Common) is dispatched to get rid of them. Both films also conclude at a family cabin.

In the trailer, "Danny Boy" is played. Liam Neeson sang "Danny Boy" in The Lego Movie (2014).
When Jimmy is running from Shawn's men after meeting him at a restaurant, you can briefly see a poster of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
Ed Harris' character is shown near a framed sports jersey with the number 94, honoring the Rangers Stanley Cup Championship during the 1993-1994 season.

During the bar scene, Liam Neeson mentions having a drink with Mickey Featherstone. In real life, Mickey Featherstone was a member of the New York Irish-American gang called The Westies, based out of Hell's Kitchen.
