Reasonably Awesome
ket229124 October 2022
The only reason I heard about this was from following Joel Haver and I made an account to tell you about it. You'll see a lot of familiar art styles and might recognize a lot of the people who put work into this collection of mostly animated shorts. It's pure fun. IDK what the haters are jabbering about. This is the type of media where you probably know what you're getting into, and it delivers. A legend from beyond the grave even voices a character. In the age of awful pandering BS, Hulu delivered a collection of talented people who just wanted to make something you can grab a bowl of teeth rotting candy and sit down to enjoy. Anybody complaining about this needs to eat a Snickers.

Some good segments, some eh segments, mixed bag anthology
seige-hound19 October 2022
It's an anthology halloween special. There were some really good segments. I'm a big fan of Joel Haver and David Firth, and seeing them in something this mainstream is neat for sure.

A lot of the segments unfortunately fall into pretty cliche slasher tropes. Seeing the different animation styles is cool and all, but at least 3 of the segments, and the overarching narrative of the Paloni Show are all the same plot wise. Justin Roiland, as always, plays the same character as he always does. He has like 2 voices that he chooses from. Same with Zach Hadel, although in my opinion his voice is a little more tolerable.

But the standout segments were great. Some very creative uses of animation throughout. Joel Haver and David Firth, of couse, were my favourites. I love Joel Haver's sense of humor, and David Firth continues his creepy satirical sensibilities. There was also Rafillo, who created a crazy animation called Killer Bathtub. He seems to be most famous on TikTok but he's mostly Spanish language so I haven't heard of him before.

Lee Hardcastle also did a great claymation segment, really showing off his talent. And Jaime Rodriguez also made a horrifically well animated short.

Overall I say it's worth watching, if only to see some exclusive animation from some of the best indie animators working today.

People were looking for Rick and Morty, but it felt like psychicpebbles
mark-3008029 October 2022
It really is just old YouTube, you can really see Zach's influence. It honestly doesn't work that well with the Rick and Morty writers that well. It would have better if it was just Zach. Them together gives off like an odd David Lynch esque slapstick comedy. I wouldn't watch it if you're over 30, most of the jokes are anti humor and are carried by the obscure dialogue on top of the obscene situations.

This review does require me to type more. I feel like I typed enough. I don't really have anything else to say. I said what I needed to say. I haven't had a character constraint since highschool.

Interdimensional Cable
savarrah24 October 2022
If you like Rick and Morty, then you will like this! There are hits and misses, but of course, so was the interdimensional cable access shows that they had. Some shows were funny, some gross, and some were disturbing.

I liked a lot of the nods to the iconic horror movies. I think there was at least 3 maybe 4 big movies that I can count.

I also liked the different animation styles that were featured in the clips. There was one that was live action too.

I hope they have a Christmas special too! It would be fun to see what kind of twisted things they will do with that! I hope it's an annual tradition.

I like it

Leroy, Reggie, and Cheruce Paloni are hosting a Halloween Special featuring various shorts from edgy animators and performers. They are shooting for their own Hulu show after hosting this variety show from their suburban home.

This is co-created by Justin Roiland who brought us "Rick and Morty" and "Solar Opposites". It's that type of humor. The animation style is a lot of that although the shorts are varied including a live action one. I don't know if this is a backdoor pilot to a new show. This comes after Roiland's case got dismissed. So there is a chance. It's irreverent. I like most of the shorts although they do feel scattershot. I like it.

Come for the anthology segments, stay for those self same segments.

Arguably the "last" Roiland vehicle before all the nasty stuff came out for proper and pleasingly it's only fragments of his sweaty existential foolishness wrapped around this loose anthology/showcase format. It's a huge shame for the other creators involved that this was (and will continue to be) fairly overlooked because there's some real diamonds here. Cult flash folk like David Firth & gory claymaster Lee Hardcastle are on strong form but I was introduced to the slack brilliance of Michael Cusack and whatever Rafillo or Jaime Rodriguez are. Utterly transcendent bits of animation, and consistently funny.

I hate this. I hate all of this.
dfurball17 October 2022
The opening mirrors "Solar Opposites" and foreshadows the disaster that accompanies any project giving Justin Roiland full creative control. This special proves to be a forest fire of weird sketches and over-the-top body horror that seem way too familiar to "Rick and Morty" fans. The show recycles jokes and it quickly evolves into a tv show aimed at entertaining morons.

Remember Detective Baby Legs, who was paired with Detective Regular Legs? Now we have Long Legs in "The Paloni Show," isn't that funny?! Remember the "Personal Space" guy on Interdimensional cable that needed space so he ripped his skin off, well now we have the same idea in this special, but the people are literally bananas! Hahahah get it?!

I hate this. I hate all of this.

This could be a yearly event!
kncwdws18 October 2022
I love the idea of animated sketch comedy show! Every segment is created by different artists and it really shows. It feels completely unhinged in the best way possible.

The "hosting" segment was hilarious. It felt like a combination of Justin's humor mixed with Zach Hadel's. Mr Paloni and his chubby goblin children running around as the show just devolves was brilliant.

Just like any anthology, there are hits and misses. But honestly, I love the variety of content. Got to see some of my favorite indie creators such as Joel Haver and David Firth. Can't wait to see what else this team will make next! Great job Justin and great job Hulu!

Not very funny.
second-exodous17 October 2022
I'm not sure what I was expecting. I like rick and morty, and it uses a lot of the same voice actors, but this wasn't that good. Only a few of the shorts were any good and the rest were just boring. The main story, with the hosts, I wish they would have just focused on that. I'd say which shorts I liked but having just watched it a few hours ago I can not for the life of me really remember any of them. They were also really short, all of them ended leaving me thinking 'wait, that is it?' I wish there was only like 3 shorts, like the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror format, but they crammed way too much in this special.

If a Paloni show came out I'd give it a shot though, like I said the story of the hosts was alright. I don't think it exists though, I looked it up on Hulu and tried to find a wiki and nothing. Either this is a one off joke or the introduction to a new show.

If you grew up on funnyjunk.com and ebaums world, you will love this
xhzrdx19 October 2022
This was sooooo good. I grew up on this kind of stuff and have been following some of these artists for a long time. I find it kind of hilarious some of the reviews I'm reading talking about plot as if that even matters. If you remember watching videos like "gonads and strife" or "homestar runner" or if you love interdimensional cable in Rick and Morty, you will love this. I am adding more words because I need 300 characters but it is important that you know that if you don't like this special it is simply because you are not cool, sorry. It was lovely to see Roiland showcasing all these incredible artists and I really hope they do this again next year. P. S. Hit up Screamerclauz, he would have fit in perfectly in this special<3.

Could not be worse if they tried
MAXL0019 October 2022
Absolute garbage excuse for entertainment. Not a single sketch was funny or interesting and the main "storyline" seems like it was just thrown together. If you like interdimensional cable then you will hate this. Getting to show off a verity of animation and writing styles is a super awesome thing, but for it to turn out like this is disappointing. Please don't waste your time on this and if you're reading this while watching and hoping for it to get better, it doesn't. Sit in the dark quietly for an hour instead of watching this.

It's also just sad that this will be Gilbert Godfried's last performance.

So disappointing.
Dodge-Zombie17 October 2022
So the main part of this programme is from the same people who brought us "Rick and Morty" and "Solar Opposites" which is generally a good sign.

It's a series of shorts so I was hoping for something like "Love, Death & Robots" or maybe like the old BBC programme "Monkey Dust".

Well I'm writing this while I'm still watching it and all I can say is I was wrong. The Inbetween sections are not upto the same standard as either of the programmes that have come before.

None of the shorts are well made. They are at best a poor excuse for entertainment. It seems that very little effort was put into this at all. Yet another waste of time that pretending to be edgy because it's animation with swearing.

Not remotely amusing. Nothing funny. Nothing of quality.

I can only assume that it's aimed at people who eat Tide Pods.

Dismissed.

Roiland and Friends Bring Their A-Game
ShadowsBeneathTheLight17 October 2022
If you're a fan of Rick n Morty or Solar Opposites, this is the Halloween Special for you. Justin Roiland teams up with a bunch of undiscovered animators who create their own 3-5 minutes Halloween shorts in a chance to impress both Hulu and the viewers over the next hour. The A or Main story involves 3 humanoids (one voiced by Roiland himself) hosting the special in order to stay on Hulu's good grace, only for it delove quickly as they must take their cousin Trick-R-Treating. The A story definitely has some strong Solar Opposite vibes, from the animation style to the intentional 4th-wall breaking Hulu references, even down to the perosnalities of the host and various side characters. While there are some laughs and the A story gets better as it goes on, it's the shorts that really steal the show (which is the point).

Each short is uniquely different and memorable, yet still equally creepy and hilarious. Some shorts genuinely made me say "oh my god" or wtf, but all of them had me laughing by the end. All in all, this show was a very fun take on Halloween and gave me a lot of laughs. If you enjoy Justin Roiland's work and love Halloween, definitely give this show a watch!

Absolutely just trash.
bethka-6673119 October 2022
I love Rick and Morty 10/10. I enjoy Solar Opposites 7.2/10. What I just spent wasting my time watching for over an hour, was an absolute cash grab. HULU probably just said "make something, these idiots will watch anything." I was pretty amped up about it at first when I seen the creators name. I find myself overly bored, disgusted and annoyed. It's dull. Seemed to myself like it was an over glorified, way of stepping back to the 60's-80's if you were busy on an acid trip. The main story was okay, and slightly gripped you in because he uses Mortys voice for it. Overall, don't waste you're time on this I'll-Fated movie. 100% Disappointing.

Thank you Justin!!!
ledzepgrl20 October 2022
If you aren't familiar with and have love for Justin's sense of humor and style then skip this Halloween special. If you love any of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim's shows then it is safe to say you'll thoroughly enjoy what the Paloni siblings have put together for us all. Echoing what another review says, some of the shorts had me whispering wtf to myself but I still laughed at each one. Some more than others of course. I rewatched Plopsie and Friends, the banana party, rightbehindyouton, the alien claymation, camp death lake, megahex and last but not least bet it was Becca. I loved creek down the street but didnt watch for a second Time. Being an artist myself, even if I'm not impressed with the writing I can appreciate the animation. Kudos to Jamie Rodriguez for bet it was Becca. Way rad! And being a Primus fan I love the claymation work les Claypool has done so Lee Hardcastle's alien short was a blast to watch.

better off watching YouTube shorts
GSK2320 October 2022
A massively huge T U R D rolling slowly down hill toward YOU and you are paralyzed. Good luck with that!

Roiland has now been noticed by those with big wallets and he seems to be seizing the moment. All I can say to him is "good for you!" He's clearly earned it.

Let's hope he's squirreling his money away, because it looks like those wallets will be closing soon!

My gawd, I barely made it through two episodes of Solar Opposites!! It's EXACTLY like Rick and Morty, but on a different network! Again, good for him, but we don't need this at all.

Then season 6 of Rick and Morty was looking like it might finally be a return to form. Until episode 5 and 6. The last one was just f r e a k i n g unbearable. For me, at least, that show went out on sort of a good note: 4 out of 6 episodes is a pretty good score. But, I'm done. It's now way past over-saturation.

And now this Paloni stuff. Are they random, poorly developed characters thrown together merely to let Roiland "host" the show AND to see if he can actually create new characters for Hulu to own? Or, gasp, are they truly thinking the Palonis are going to get their own show now? My gawd, can you imagine two almost IDENTICAL Roiland shows on Hulu? (Which are, sigh, IDENTICAL to Rick and Morty!!)

Yeah, it's boring. Not funny. You see the jokes coming miles away. Plus, the new characters, as I said, are really under developed. We meet them outside their house and never learn much about any of them to care.

Then the anthology of YouTube quality shorts (think Adult Swim, I guess?). Wow. Again, you see the gags coming a mile away. Some bad, no terrible animation and even worse voice work. Gottfried is here in his last role and it's... super predictable and underwhelming. His great voice is almost miscast here, as it doesn't quite fit the character at all.

Then we get to the super anticipated Simon Hanselmann piece! I've been a huge fan of Megg & Mogg for years now, so this was going to be the high point for me! But.. it wasn't. The voice actors brought NOTHING to their job that day. I wonder if anyone trained as a voice director was anywhere near the studio that day? Absolutely boring acting. The script seemed loosely based on a previous comic, so this felt like Hanselmann just lazily handed a comic to the director and then went home to his new million dollar mansion and forgot to check in. Utterly flat, boring and predictable with no character depth. Too bad. Fans will already know the depth, but new viewers will be stumped. Shameful.

The rest of the shorts should have stayed on YouTube. No reason to bring them to Hulu or any other network. I can totally see hiring YouTube animators, and giving them a budget and team... but to just shuffle them from one to another did nothing. The quality was crap all around and the scripts were in dire need of a script doctor (surely Hulu can help out a bit??).

I don't know who did the Junji Ito-like apple story, but that one worked out pretty good. The animation was amazingly great and top notch. Reminded me of bits in Otomo's Akira. The story was so-so, but not great.

The wrap around Paloni stuff concluded and I decided to avoid anything by Roiland from now on. The crazy rambling/ranting thing he did for Rick was fun, but now it's everywhere and it's wayyyyy past time to leave.
