Capcom heads into the wrong direction.
21 April 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This game was a massive step in the wrong direction, and thankfully the disappointing sales figures have given Capcom the spanking they deserve for releasing this game/movie hybrid.

Quite frankly this installment was insulting to both old and new fans alike, very dull gameplay and that fact it had to resort to so many cheap and nasty QTE sections cements this as the worst RE game by a country mile (in my opinion, of course).

On top of that it seems like half of each campaign is a running boss fight. "Oh, I've already killed you like a dozen times already, but sure I'll have a go at killing you again despite my guns doing sweet f_ck all". They really dragged these borefest boss fights out, the whole relentless boss thing was quite interesting in RE2 with the Tyrant and Nemesis in RE3 but here it's just overused and pointless. Plus the fact that it's pretty much all the same anyway; dump thousands of rounds into boss, wait for weakspot to open, run up to boss and perform QTE, rinse repeat...

The controls really needed to be worked upon, oh and Capcom I don't need to be constantly reminded of what button to press to open a door or to pick an item up. You didn't do this fifteen years ago when I was a kid and you certainly don't need to do it now that I'm an adult. One of the worst segments by far was on the Sub with Ada when it was filling with water, I had to stand exactly at a specific point and press the action button, however its made difficult when your subjected to a strict time limit. I think this was the section where I died the most.

The camera was generally forgivable, however what is not forgivable is for the game to hijack the camera to show me an event while I'm still in control of the character and there are enemies around (e.g. one bit where I'm running around a street only for the camera to completely draw away from my guy and focus on a chopper crashing into a building). If I'm that interested I'll view it myself.

Storyline was meh. The game had a nice long duration but when its such a chore to play this is a double edged sword. I've completed the game with Leon, Chris, Ada and Jake but there is no way in hell I'm going to torture myself doing the exact same thing as Sherry, Piers or Helena. A shame as unlocking extra skills, documents and figurines would be quite tempting IF the game was fun to play in the first place.

Poorly thought out driving sections, swimming, overly linear gameplay (I've played on-rail shooters with more freedom) just add to the annoying slog I had through this game.

There are a couple of plus points, but they seem so weighed down in a sea of sh_t I don't feel they are worth mentioning.

Thankfully I only got this game for ten pounds, although I still feel a bit ripped. Next time I'm going to thoroughly check for reviews on the next installment, as unfortunately I can't seem to trust Capcom too much anymore.

4.0 out of 10 from me.
