Surviving Death

It is the Gangs of New York meets CSI. That is the premise of the first episode of Copper.

Set in 1864 in the sprawling multi ethnic and poverty stricken slums of Five Points. Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones) is an Irish immigrant police officer in the corrupt New York City Police Department. A soldier who went to fight in the Civil War. When he returned he found his daughter dead and his wife missing. As a policeman he is trying to figure out what happened to his family.

In the first episode he investigates a death of a young girl who was later sexualy assaulted. She was thought to be a prostitute and Corcoran had seen her earlier where he offered her an egg. A black doctor gives him forensic information and his superior officer might be protecting the genteel upper classes responsible for the death.

A so-so beginning that ramps up as the episode goes along. I think it just had too many well known tropes at the start. It looks good on screen with its authentic costumes. You really get a feel of the period. It unfortunately also has a lot of Canadian accents which gives away its actual filming location.

Best Show on TV

I wish I could have watched this show on the big screen, but I was out of town on business. I ended up watching it at Dish Online and I am very happy I did not wait till I got home. This show is going to be a classic. I thought when Charles Dickens was describing New York City that he was just being melancholy. After seeing a few documentaries I know his description was true and I can see that Copper has captured this sense of despair perfectly. One of my colleagues at Dish said she has no idea how they are going to put together forensic cases with no forensics to speak of, but I don't see it as an obstacle, but rather a gimmick. I am definitely interested in what Fontana comes up with.
