Atlanta Readers: Win Passes to See The Purge

13 May 2013 2:51 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There are two home-invasion-thrillers on the way this summer, and first up is The Purge.  The movie takes place in a world where the government keeps the peace by sanctioning an annual 12-hour period where everything—including murder—becomes legal.  During this madness, a family inside a gated community fights to survive without turning into monsters themselves.  You'll see a fair share of blockbusters this summer, but this is a movie that could be a hit from strong word-of-mouth. I'm pleased to announce that we're giving away ten admit-two passes to the Atlanta screening of The Purge.  Hit the jump to find out how you can see the film early and for free.  The film stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max BurkholderThe Purge opens June 7th. Hello fellow queer cinephiles!  As we enter the long, hot days of summer, everyone wants to cool off in a theater and watch other people try to save the world.  The summer tends to be a pretty testosterone-soaked season for movies, so I’m here to help you sort the films you want to be in the front row for from those you just use as an excuse to cuddle in the back.

Editor's note: * denotes a film that includes openly lesbian/bi actresses or lesbian/bi characters.

You’re there to see: Venus and Serena Williams, obviously.

In a nutshell: Who doesn’t want to know more about the two sisters who changed tennis forever? This one’s a must-see for any lesbian with a pair of athletic shoes.

I recently had the fortunate opportunity to sit down for a one on one interview with the head of Blumhouse Pictures, Jason Blum to talk about his upcoming thriller The Purge. For those of you who may not recognize his name or company, perhaps you’ve seen at least one of the “little” films he has been instrumental in getting up onto the big screen; Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister.  »

Stanley Film Fest 2013 Review: ‘The Purge’ Leaves Little of Value Behind

3 May 2013 11:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

When is a good old-fashioned home invasion movie not a good old-fashioned home invasion movie? When it sets itself in the near future and forgets to be all that good. Welcome to The Purge. It’s 2022, and the United States has finally solved its growing problem with violence and crime by making it legal. More precisely, it’s legal for a twelve hour period one night per year. Citizens are encouraged to stay safe in their secure homes, unless of course they care to vent their animalistic rage and partake in the annual event. The Sandin family feels safe behind their state of the art security shutters, but when their dumbass son has a crisis of conscience and lets an injured man in, all hell breaks loose. James (Ethan Hawke) is a salesman for a security company, and this year has been his best on record with sales to each and every one of his neighbors of »

"Dads leave, you don’t have to be such a pussy about it." – Tony Stark, 'Iron Man Three'

Greetings from the apocalypse! Free Comics? An "Iron Man" sequel that doesn't suck? Genre festivals, eccentric painter docs and serial killer biopics? Have I been irradiated and gone to heaven? Nope, it's all happening man, it's all happening …

Friday, May 3

Pow! In Theaters

As a raving fan of Shane Black and Robert Downey Jr.'s first collab, the neo noir comedy "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," I had hoped that this director/star combo would hit it out of the park with "Iron Man Three." Well, frankly, Shane hit it out of the park and into the stratosphere, mesosphere, ionosphere, etc. Pulpy, groovy, bang-up fun, this is the best cinematic iteration of ol' shellhead yet, and while Joss Whedon got the quipy part right in "Marvel's The Avengers," this one perfectly balances »
