‘This Is Us’: How Dan Fogelman Broke Records and Hearts With NBC’s Hit

Mandy Moore is crying.

Given that she’s filming a scene for NBC’s breakout hit “This Is Us,” tears might as well be written into her contract. But the actress is trying to get through a particularly impassioned speech to Sterling K. Brown, who plays her adopted son, Randall, and it’s taking its toll. Take after take on the tree-lined streets of L.A.’s Hancock Park, which stands in for New Jersey, she pushes herself, the tears threatening to destroy the prosthetics that turn the 32-year-old star into a sixtysomething grandmother — until a passing bird “releases,” as Brown puts it ever so politely, on her hat.

CBS Buys Stake in Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment

10 February 2017 7:13 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

CBS has bought a stake in producer Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment banner and will handle worldwide distribution of its TV series.

The company’s current shows include HBO’s “Divorce,” Netflix’s “Santa Clarita Diet,” CBS’ “Life in Pieces,” Showtime’s “The Chi” and ABC’s “American Housewife.” Kapital has five pilots ordered so far for the 2017-18 network development cycle.

Kapital Entertainment will operate autonomously from the Eye’s CBS Television Studios arm and retain the flexibility to sell to non-cbs Corp. outlets. The first project to fall under the deal is Kapital’s CBS comedy pilot “9J, 9K and 9L,” from writers Dana Klein and Marc Feuerstein, with Feuerstein also set to star.

“CBS is a content company, and this new venture immediately establishes another source to create more programming assets for our distribution pipeline,” said CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves. “Aaron is a talented and creative producer, a »

Exclusive: Get Your Tissues Ready! 'This Is Us' Composer Reveals His Secret to Making You Cry

6 February 2017 2:30 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

This Is Us is in rarefied air, thanks to compelling storytelling, heartbreaking performances and tear-jerking twists. But the most underrated ingredient to its incalculable success is something that’s right under everyone’s nose: the score. Composer Siddhartha Khosla, of Goldspot fame, is the man responsible for opening up those tear ducts -- not that the show needed the help.

Khosla has deep ties to This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, with whom he attended University of Pennsylvania more than two decades ago. After dipping his toe in television scoring with Fogelman’s acerbic alien comedy, The Neighbors, it was almost a no-brainer when his college pal floated him an early script for This Is Us last spring seeking out his thoughts.

“It was thoughtful, beautiful [and] honest. It made you cry,” Khosla recalls in a chat with Et. “It pulled at your heartstrings in a really beautiful way and inspired me to write. That was the »
