People can often become so comfortable with the familiarity of their daily routines that they lose all passion and determination in maturing and further pushing their boundaries. Sometimes the best way people can emotionally evolve is to allow others to help them take a meaningful exploration into who they are, and why they’re at their current stage in their lives. That significant examination is enthrallingly showcased in the new documentary, ‘Bending Steel,’ which was crafted by first-time feature film writer, director and producer, Dave Carroll. In honor of the movie’s release tomorrow on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Instant Video and its official website, Shockya has an exclusive clip from the [ Read More ]

I Am Thor
Directed by Ryan Wise
2015, USA / Canada /Finland / Sweden
Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression, and machismo but even by Heavy metal standards, the artist known as Thor (a.k.a. Jon Miki Thor) is an absolute beast!
The Norse god impersonator, semi-professional bodybuilder, performance artist, b-movie actor, and all-around nice guy is the subject of I Am Thor, an 84 minute documentary by director Ryan Wise which shines some insight into Thor’s wild life and documents his long-running come back. With a music career spanning five decades, Thor is one of the legends of rock-n-roll that not enough people know exists —and hopefully this film will change that. 15 years in the making and I Am Thor is finally here, and totally worth the wait.
I’ve seen some remarkable screenings over my 19 years of attending the Fantasia Film Festival. I’ll never forget the enthusiastic,...

It seems as though every year we have been presented with an increased quantity (and quality) of independent films. So many of these films end up having strong festival runs, then disappear into cinematic limbo; but as more boutique distributors pop up, more of these films are ending up getting some sort of a theatrical and/or VOD release. With this year coming to a close, I want to highlight some of the best films that I saw in 2013 that -- to the best of my knowledge -- have yet to announce a U.S. distribution deal. I say that, however, with total confidence that they will be distributed one way or another in the next 18 months. Part One: 9 Full Moons, Baby Blues, Before You Know It, Be Good, Bending Steel, Bluebird, The Bounceback, Coldwater, The Discoverers, Far Marfa...

It’s lucky 13 for the fun and fabulous Coney Island Film Festival! That’s right, 2013 will see the 13th annual edition of this New York City staple that combines the fine art of filmmaking with the rambunctious art of sideshow performing on Sept. 20-22.
The fest opens on the 20th with the documentary More Than the Rainbow, a profile of Matt Weber, an NYC cab driver who moonlights as an art photographer. The film is directed by Dan Wechsler.
Other docs screening at the fest include the uplifting tale of A Clown’s Recovery, directed by Matthew Broomfield; the sports drama of One Wall: Kings of Coney Island, directed by Joe Glickman; the profile of a Coney Island legend in The Commander in Chief, directed by Jim McDonnell; the struggle of Bending Steel, directed by Dave Carroll; and World Circus, directed by Angela Snow.

Carroll’s Debut A Wonder-ful Metamorphosis
It turns out that being an old time strongman has less to do with bulging muscles, leopard skin leotards and handle bar mustaches than it does with carrying on tradition and achieving the seemingly impossible. For Chris Shoeck, contorting bodies of solid steel is more than a niche hobby – it’s a personal relationship in which all of his angst and frustrations are converted into physical force and positive vibes. Director Dave Carroll discovered Shoeck and his throwback obsession when his dog wandered into the aspiring strongman’s dungeonesque practice cage in the basement laundry room of the building where they both live. After an awkward first encounter, Chris, who has spent most of his life avoiding human interaction by either bending, boozing or burying his nose in a book, found Carroll to be incredibly easy to confide in. Shoeck’s inspiring transformative journey...

Who would have known that a film about a severely introverted 43-year-old man who aspires to become a professional Oldetime Strongman could be so emotionally riveting? Okay, well, Dave Carroll must have known something because his documentary Bending Steel is exactly that. A sublimely intimate showcase of one man's existential struggle, Bending Steel follows Chris Schoeck as he learns how to maintain full control of his mind. Schoeck puts all of his strength into bending seemingly unpliable objects. It is a classic example of mind over matter. If Schoeck can convince himself that he can bend something, then he will most likely be able to do it. Schoeck finds a worthy opponent in a 2" diameter steel rod that seems to tease him with its pure, galvanized strength. His struggle to conquer this rod serves as the intense conflict that propels Schoeck's character arc. If Schoeck can bend this rod, he...

Dave Carroll makes his filmmaking debut with the documentary "Bending Steel," which follows Chris Schoeck who overcomes physical, mental and perceptual limitations to prove his superhuman strength. Both Carroll and Schoeck embarked on their dreams late in life, but "Bending Steel" reminds us that it's never too late too late to start your journey. What it's about: "Bending Steel" is the intimate journey of an introverted man who struggles to shed self-perceived limitations that shackle his body and mind. About the filmmaker: I grew up with my sister in a small New Jersey suburb. My parents were always supportive and they did their best to nurture our interests. We started acting at an early age and joined the Screen Actors Guild. We would skip school so dad could take us in to New York City and go on auditions. Eventually I took a break from the business but over time...
