TV hostess is murdered and Annika Bengtzon gets involved
21 July 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The second episode in the series "Prime Time" is not quite up to the first, which I rated an average 6. I'd rate this 5.5 if I could, so I give it a 5. It's still reasonably entertaining as a showcase for the supporting actors. Their roles are quirky because they are playing show people and those around show people, and show people seem to be quirky. As in many organizations, jealousies and rivalries come to the fore as do affairs and broken affairs. Their backbiting is pretty open.

The pretty hostess of a TV show is murdered. The main suspect, Anne, is a friend of Annika, so her involvement is not only by her assignment to the case but also through this connection. Her first job is to get the names of the 10 people involved, which she manages to do, often pushing the boundaries of trespass.

The script manages to keep us guessing, and the camera lingers just long enough on each suspect to do the same. Experienced viewers who know enough to look for motive, means and opportunity may ferret out the killer before the climactic scene. Annika doesn't solve it. Instead there is a deus ex machina, which is a tape that turns up.

The back story of the murder is told through a series of flashbacks. The script keeps throwing enough new balls in the air that it prevents us from zeroing in on a solution to the mystery. Not a bad technique.

Annika is quite sly in the various ways she gets people to talk to her. Part of the fun is just seeing her and these people around her carrying on.
