SXSW 2015: Hollywood Heads to Austin for Annual Festivities

SXSW 2015: Hollywood Heads to Austin for Annual Festivities
Hollywood headed down south for the 2015 SXSW film, interactive and music festival in Austin, Texas, for the annual 10-day event, which wraps up on March 22.

SXSW kicked off on Friday the 13th, very fittingly with a haunted house party, hosted by Wgn America’s supernatural thriller “Salem.”

“No one wants to go up those flights of stairs over and over and over again. Once you’re up, you kind of just stay here,” star Shane West joked about the jam-packed rooftop soireé, which was complete with aerialists (a.k.a. levitating enchantresses) and apothecaries — better known as multiple bars — as he sipped on a cocktail.

“It’s funky-town,” new cast member Lucy Lawless told Variety, hours after arriving at SXSW with her co-stars (the entire “Salem” cast took a six-hour road trip together from their Shreveport, La., set to Austin, thanks to their flights being canceled at the last minute). “[Austin] has got so much character.

‘Community’ Movie? Dan Harmon Responds to Rumors at SXSW Yahoo Panel

‘Community’ Movie? Dan Harmon Responds to Rumors at SXSW Yahoo Panel
The morning after “Community” held a “Greendale School Dance” party at SXSW, Dan Harmon moderated a panel on Sunday with the Season 6 cast, cheered on by a room full of fans who have long been tweeting #sixseasonsandamovie.

With production on the show’s sixth season well under way — there are only two episodes left to shoot ahead of the launch on Yahoo on March 17 — fans peppered the showrunner with questions about the possibility of a movie.

“Yahoo seems down for just about anything,” Harmon said, quipping, “I don’t know why they’d turn their nose up to a movie about a low-rated show. They seem to be very naive.”

The panel kicked off with stars Joel McHale, Alison Brie and Gillian Jacobs, who riffed about their memories of the show. “This is why I fight for the show,” said McHale. “I know it’s the best show on television.

"School Dance" Misses Some Steps

The title of rapper and comedian Nick Cannon’s directorial film debut (which he also wrote and produced) is a bit of a misnomer. Though it does climax with a song and dance competition, School Dance—which sounds like it is focused on typical prom drama—centers more around gang violence amidst a high school lock in. More surprising, however, is that Cannon draws much inspiration for this film from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet (going even so far as to actually quote the play at one particularly odd moment). Once again the iconic play is set in a high school. But this time the Jets are The Ranger$, the popular African American boys who “run the school” with their incredible rapping and dance skills. They attract the attention of young Romeo, or Jason (Bobb’e J. Thompson), who wants to join them to win the attention of his fair Juliet,

Meet Pete Davidson, the Newest 'Saturday Night Live' Featured Player (Video)

  • Moviefone
After a shake-up at the "Weekend Update" desk, "Saturday Night Live" continues to tweak its lineup with the addition of a new featured player to the cast.

Pete Davidson will join "SNL" when its 40th season premieres later this month. Here's a quick bio of the 20-year-old stand-up comic, via Deadline:

A native of Staten Island, NY, Davidson started his career in comedy at 16, using it as a therapeutic outlet after losing his father, a New York City firefighter, on 9/11. Making his rounds in the New York comedy scene, he was spotted by Nick Cannon who took him under his wing. Davidson was a semi-regular on the revival of Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out improv comedy series on MTV2 last year, leading to a gig on the MTV2 comedy/reality show Guy Code. Davidson, who dropped out of college, made his film-acting debut in Cannon's direct-to-video School Dance.

'School Dance': Film Review

'School Dance': Film Review
Teen sex farces don’t come more witless than entertainer Nick Cannon's feature directorial debut. Fueled by endless scatological jokes revolving around black and Mexican-American stereotypes, this hip-hop infused effort features a gallery of notable comedians working hard to earn laughs that never come. Sneaked into a limited theatrical run primarily to raise VOD interest, School Dance is the sort of oppressively offensive comedy that makes you aware of your brain cells dying as you watch it. List The Hollywood Reporter Reveals Hollywood's 100 Favorite Films There is at least an element of sweetness to the proceedings, in the form

Nick Cannon's #5WorthWatching: Here Are His 5 Favorite High School Movies

Nick Cannon is a man of many hats; he's an actor, singer, producer, host, DJ, and now he can add director to that list.

His feature-length directorial debut, "School Dance," which comes out today (July 2) in theaters and on VOD, is the classic tale of a teenage boy who likes a girl who doesn't know he exists -- and the only way to get her attention is to find a way into his high school's hottest dance crew.

We figured, after just having made a high school movie, Cannon would be the perfect person to share his five favorite high school movies.

Without further ado, Nick Cannon's #5WorthWatching: High School Movies.

Amber Rose Cast in New Sitcom Selfie: Talks Justin Bieber, Her Hot Body and Kissing Courtney Love!
Amber Rose's movie debut in the new comedy School Dance is only hitting theaters tomorrow, but she's already lined up her next acting gig. And it's major! Rose just told me that her character Fit Brit in the pilot for Selfie (an ABC sitcom about a woman who becomes a social media star after a video about her humilating break up goes viral) will be a recurring role. "I'm so excited," she said. "I start shooting in August." For now, Rose is concentrating on her clothing line Rose and Ono. She recently posted some very sexy selfies (hello, booty!) modeling the collection on her Instagram. Could you believe that Rose doesn't have a regular gym workout to keep her bod...

Box Office: ‘Tammy’ Tries to Steal Fireworks from ‘Transformers’

Box Office: ‘Tammy’ Tries to Steal Fireworks from ‘Transformers’
It’s Melissa McCarthy versus Optimus Prime in an Independence Day face-off.

Historically one of the busiest weekends, the Fourth of July frame should see “Transformers: Age of Extinction” retain its B.O. crown with an expected $50 million-plus holiday weekend, although McCarthy’s new comedy “Tammy” will provide plenty of fireworks.

Look for the New Line comedy, which McCarthy co-wrote along with her director (and husband) Ben Falcone, to do north of $40 million in more than 3,300 locations over its first five days of release.

That’s an impressive display of pyrotechnics given that the story of a woman on a road trip with her grandmother cost $20 million to produce, with McCarthy exchanging a lower up-front salary for a piece of the back-end. It will also show that McCarthy is one of the few actors who can “open” a movie, an endangered concept in an era of superhero and CGI stars.

Watch Trailer For Nick Cannon-Directed High School Comedy 'School Dance'

Who knew that Mr. Mariah Carey - aka Nick Cannon - had directed another feature film? It's a high school comedy titled "School Dance," which judging from the trailer, is exactly the sort of film you would expect Cannon to direct. I mean, seriously, think about it. If Cannon was directing "Selma" then that would be an unexpected surprise, and we would be forced to look at him in a different light altogether (“Wow! Cannon is directing 'Selma'? I didn’t know the brother was so deep”). But "School Dance"? Yeah that sounds about right. The cast is also what you would expect: Mike Epps, Katt Williams, Luenell, Amber Rose, George Lopez, with Bobb’e J. Thompson in the lead,...

Kevin Hart and Jamie Foxx to Play Movie Hit Men
Kevin Hart is setting the record right now for most projects per square inch. There is [takes a deep breath]: his Romany Malco–starring ABC pilot; Think Like a Man Too; Ride Along 2; Ballers with Lebron James; Get Hard with Will Ferrell; The Wedding Ringer with Josh Gad; Nick Cannon's School Dance; a buddy-cop movie with Seth Rogen; Real Husbands of Hollywood; and an eventual new stand-up special. Now Variety reports he has signed on to co-star with Jamie Foxx in Black Phantom. Directed by Hart's frequent collaborator Tim Story, the movie tells the story of a double-crossed hit man who teams up with the Black Phantom, the hit man who was originally sent to kill him. Wonder how they'll work short jokes into it — "They should call you a hard-to-hit man, because you're such a small target."

Fox Grooms 20-Year-Old Comedian Pete Davidson As Primetime Breakout With ‘Sober Companion’ Role: Video

Fox‘s Night of Comedy showcase at the Improv last fall featured then-19-year-old comedian Pete Davidson. The network brass loved him and quickly signed him to a talent holding deal. After a small guest-starring role on Fox’s freshman comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which marked his first TV acting gig, Davidson got his first network test for Fox’s comedy pilot Sober Companion and landed the role on the spot, with Fox casting executives bullish on his breakout potential. A native of Staten Island, NY, Davidson started his career in comedy at a young age, using it as a therapeutic outlet after losing his father, a New York City firefighter, on 9/11. Making his rounds in the New York comedy scene, he was spotted by Nick Cannon who took him under his wing. Nina Shaw Has Repped the Leading Players in TV and Furthered Their Careers

Nina Shaw Has Repped the Leading Players in TV and Furthered Their Careers
Nina Shaw has demonstrated a keen eye for emerging talent over the years, from Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx, signed when he was ensemble player on Fox TV’s sketch comedy “In Living Color” in the early 1990s, to Ava DuVernay, whom she helped transition from publicist to best director winner at Sundance for “Middle of Nowhere” in 2012.

But according to Shaw — who’s being honored on April 16 as 2013 Entertainment Lawyer of the Year by the Beverly Hills Bar Assn. — the secret to her success is more elemental. “I’m incredibly tenacious, but I also try so hard in my work to really listen to people and address their point of view,” says Shaw, who co-founded the firm Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka and Finkelstein with Ernest Del in 1989. “In the end I always remember who I’m an advocate for.”

Recent beneficiaries of that advocacy include talkshow host Arsenio Hall, whom she

Will Ferrell And Kevin Hart To Get Hard For Warner Bros.

Well, actually, it’s not what it sounds like. Rather, it sounds like Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart are going to take an idea from Spike Lee’s 25th Hour and turn it into a comedy.

Two funnymen have both signed on to star in the upcoming comedy Get Hard for Warner Bros and that’s the truth.

More precisely, the studio is currently in talks to acquire the new comedy Get Hard, which comes with stars Ferrell and Hart already attached. The script for a starring vehicle for the aforementioned comedians will be written by Ian Roberts and Jay Martel, best known for being the showrunners on Comedy Central’s Key & Peele.

Ferrell will reportedly play a rich, soft-handed investment bank manager sentenced to a maximum security prison for a crime he didn’t commit, who hires the streetwise guy (Hart) who normally washes his car to get him

'House Party' Remake Details, Plus Our Favorite Scenes from the Original

Last we heard of a House Party remake, it was February of this year and Nick Cannon was the one interested in returning to the franchise. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) Cannon instead decided to veer off in a different direction, opting to cowrite and direct School Dance, due out next year. But that doesn't mean we won't be getting another House Party movie, as Moviehole tells us production will begin next month in South Africa on House Party: Tonight's the Night, which will be one of the final movies produced under WB's now-shuttered Warner Premiere label. The (direct-to-video?) reboot will once again focus on a music-loving duo who have their differences (one is wild, the other a bit more restrained) and, yes, they eventually...
