This whole thing is so personal. Both Patty and Ellen are desperate to win and willing to give it all to do so. The problem is that they are dealing with figures who lie below the surface or deep in cyberspace. Patty has no problem producing as much cash as she needs. Ellen is going to give up everything she has earned to win this case with little or no help from her client. But there is a third party and it appears to be an international one. McClaren is really a man of his word. As big a jerk as he is, he appears to be the only path with some integrity. His people are betraying them for their own reasons, especially the Irish guy who frequently meets with a really bad man. They have to win this case for some reason which we don't know now. Patty got her information (who knows if it's worth anything) and Ellen got flimflammed.
