Nikki is also approached by Andy Farmer. His mother Annie was the appropriate adult at the interview with serial killer Arnold Mears, who now directs Annie to the sites of his victims' remains where she collects their bones. Very grim but watchable opening episode.

Leo is brought in to give evidence in a trial looking at the tragic case of a baby's death. Leo's evidence states shaken baby syndrome, opposing his is Helen Karamides, a fellow pathologist with extreme views, the courts side with Leo, Helen is further discredited when it turns out she's been carrying out unethical experiments. Convicted killer Arnold Mears, guilty the dead of several young women has teased appropriate adult and long term visitor Annie Farmer, he's handed over directions to bones, hinting at further victims. Mears has an obsession with the poem Paradise lost. Annie's collected the bones and hidden them in jars at home. Harry calls in an air condition technician, turns out he's Annie's son, he trusts in Nikki and leads her to the remains. Helen hands Leo a package, and later that night takes her own life.

This is very very dark story, both story threads running through Paradise Lost are pretty harrowing, we have the two Pathologists in conflict, and we have the woman desperate to find the truth about her daughter. We have the team itself in conflict, Nikki at odds with Leo.

The link between Helen Karamides and Arnold Mears was a little confusing at the end, there was no real explanation as to why she was seeing him prior to her death.

James Cosmo is always good value as the bad guy too, he's great and truly looks the part. Tragic part for Pooky Quesnel too. The acting is first rate in this episode. Rakie Ayola is just wonderful, almost like a character plucked out of the 1960's she's very enjoyable, I love her Cardiff accent too.

Definitely a taste around this time for stories of the ultra macabre, if that's the sort of story you like, you will love Paradise Lost. At times segments look as though they've been plucked out of a Horror movie.

8/10, it's a story I always thought would have been better in Waking the dead, it has that dark vibe to it, but it works very well.
