--First $500 --It's Alive series --Directing --God Told Me To --Selling stories to others --Favorite movies
Writer-director Larry Cohen makes for a terrific guest as he can speak a mile a minute and never run out of fun stories. Cohen starts off talking about how he got into the business and how the first story he sold brought him $500 and he knew this is what he wanted to do. He then talks about how he started making movies and why if you want freedom in filmmaking you had better be at the top like Spielberg or at the very bottom. IT'S ALIVE is discussed and Cohen says it was shot for $400,000 but ended up making $39 million on its original release. other subjects include the popularity of GOD TOLD ME TO and its connection to UNBREAKABLE. At the time of the interview they were filming PHONE BOOTH so that gets talked about and Cohen discussed how the likes of Mel Gibson were interested in the picture and what it was like being at lunch with such high-powered actors. Overall Cohen is a non-stop entertainment as he can go from one story to the next without any issues. There's no doubt that he was a maverick in filmmaking so he manages to be quite honest about the business. Some of the most interesting stuff deals with how he decides to direct one of his screenplays or sell it.
