Butterfly Dress Pledge (1974)
10 November 2015 | by (Croatia) – See all my reviews

Butterfly, aka Butterfly Dress Pledge, is yet another weird short film directed by Shuji Terayama, portraying some sort of a dreamlike hangover- ridden aftermath of a decadent party. It kinda reminds me of contemporary music videos with their infamous occult/MK-Ultra symbolism, because of visual motifs like butterflies, bondage, mirrors, puppets and one eye being covered. I really don't know what Terayama's intent here even was. All of this madness is set to a slightly unnerving piano piece and is seen through colorful filters, the view being obstructed by audience members' silhouettes. Pretty strange, somewhat alluring and somewhat unnerving.
