A tragicomic look on branding, fashion industry....
26 May 2012 | by (Sweden) – See all my reviews

How can a group of twenty somethings hipsters increase the brandvalue of their newly founded jeansbrand?

The answer: build a factory in North Korea, one of the most repressive dictatorships in the world and market as the worlds first north korean jeans and use that as a unique selling point(USP).

But as they slowly found out, it is easier said then done, numerous obstacles needs to be overcome before any deals can be made.

There are also some questions that group stumbles across that will be harder to answer.

How to uphold a code of ethics in a totalitarian state?

And should Swedish companies, regardless how noble their mission statement is do business with dictatorship countries like North Korea?

These and many other questions is something that this very interesting, well made documentary is discussing. As well as being discussion about ethics this documentary, provides a very dark comedic touch, that may be totally involuntary.

There are some great scenes when these young Swedish entrepreneurs are visiting in Pyongyang, seemingly naive, oblivious to North Koreas poverty. One of the girls doesn't understand why she isn't allowed to walk on her own through the main capital without a special, statecontrolled guide.

Could people be this naive and not knowing about the amount economic troubles North Korea has gone through in latter years?

Apparently so, and also nobody within this group seem to understand the enormous repressive state they are visiting.

Another aspect about this great documentary is the discussion of brandvalue, and what lengths people, companies are willing to go in order to establish something original and new on the market place.

Future viewers should definitely read No Logo by Naomi Klein before watching this documentary and ponder over some things that these young jeansmakers is saying.

For me this documentary was a big surprise, well made, entertaining and should be shown at business colleges over the world since this dream of becoming a self made entrepreneur, becomes everyones mission these days.

Director Maria Ramström can be very proud over her film, trying to depict the whole process with honesty, intelligence and wit.

So viewers that liked Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005), Darwin's Nightmare (2004) might want to look at this film.
