Parents Guide for
"The Americans" (2013) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

10/10 for regular TV and would give the episode an R rating if it were a movie.

Sexual content is frequent but relatively short. No nipples or genitalia are shown but butts and most of breasts are shown sometimes.

Various characters use sex to manipulate others, which is unsurprising, since the show is about spies. Very little of the sexual activity is marital.

In episode 1x07, an apparently unclothed Annet Mahendru is seen from behind from head to foot.

ep 1.8 without warning a sex scene is shown and all of the woman in it is seen other than nipples and genitals. Very graphic.

Violence & Gore

9/10

The violence in this show, while infrequent, is very realistic. There is never any gore, but blood and blood splatter are shown many times. Dead bodies are occasionally seen.

In S1E1, "Pilot", there is a flashback where it is revealed that Elizabeth was raped by her former captain. While there is no graphic detail and the lighting is very dark, there is obvious thrusting and she is in pain. This scene is rather intense and disturbing.

In S1E9, "Safehouse", a man is shot in the back of the head, causing some blood splatter. Fairly Graphic.

Profanity

8/10

For a show that features a lot of sexual content and violence, the level of profanity on average is astonishingly limited.

Mild to average words such as "Damn" and "Hell" are occasionally used. "Shit" is used rarely.

Sexual slang is also used. "Pussy" is used at least once in that context.

Sexual dialog, while very rare, can be very strong. For example, in S1E9, "Safehouse", a woman screams "Shoot yourself into me" while having sex with her boyfriend.

6/10

Alcohol, drugs, and smoking is found throughout all episodes of all seasons.

8/10

This show can be very dramatic and intense at times. Many audiences may find the violence, including the rape scene in the first episode very disturbing.

Parents should especially take note of the fact that in one episode, "love" is simply defined by Elizabeth as "a feeling", which her General agrees with. This is important because anyone who truly understands relationships and marriage knows that "love" is much more complicated and is based on much more than just biochemistry.

Total Explicit Content: 40/50

The Americans is only recommended to audiences that possess a great deal of maturity and morality regarding the topics of love, sex, sexual fidelity, marriage, and the cold war. Thus, while the "appropriate-ness" of this show can vary depending on the person, perhaps the absolute minimum age to watch it is 18.
