Storyline

Shocked by the news of the exorcism Sean joins Leo in visiting Father Jacobs though he tells them that he did not perform the exorcism and Nikki tracks down the nun,Sister Landsley, who did so,only to find she has killed herself. Leo believes the trauma of the exorcism triggered Eve's death but then he learns from Beth how Eve thought that she was possessed after passing on the measles which blinded him to John when they were younger. With the knowledge that his grandmother killed herself John believes that possession runs in the family and now he is host to the demons, leading to a further exorcism. Written by don @ minifie-1

A tale of possession
1 May 2012 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Having recently split up from his girlfriend Leo takes a break in Essex to visit his old friend; a psychiatrist named Sean Delaney. It quickly becomes apparent that Sean is drinking far too much; he has been affected by the unexplained death of Eve, one of his patients. Hoping to help his friend Leo promises to look into it and find out what caused her death. The problem is there are no obvious reasons for her to have died; it is just 'sudden death syndrome'. Nikki and Harry examine the body again and found no obvious cause of death but they do find signs of only injuries to her hands and feet that can't be explained. Meanwhile Leo learns that the girl, who was a devout Christian, believed herself to be possessed; something that happened in the home she left when her parents lost the house five years previously. When Leo asks the police to take him to her old home he has quite a surprise… it is Sean's house! During the second episode things get even stranger when we learn that Eve was treated by an exorcist on the night of her death and she wasn't the only one to believe they were possessed.

I suspect this story will divide opinion; it felt more like a supernatural chiller than the usual crime drama. The way the action kept flashing back to Sean's talks with Eve without telling us we are looking at past events may alienate some viewers; I however found it was an effective way of making things stranger than they already were and as Jodie Comer was doing such a good job as Eve I was happy to see these scenes. Guest star Adrian Dunbar also performed well as Leo's friend Sean. As a single story this made an interesting change from the usual tales of murder although I wouldn't want to see this kind of story too often as it would totally change the series.
