Storyline

Leo is called in by his old college friend, psychiatrist Sean Delaney, now a cancer-stricken alcoholic. Sean was treating inspirational, deeply religious teenager Eve Gilston, who felt neglected by her family ,and the verdict of whose death, alone in bed, apparently of arrhythmic death syndrome Sean does not believe. Accompanied by down-to-earth sergeant Brooks Leo interviews Eve's parents, lapsed Catholics Beth and Tony, wondering if the family is prone to the rare heart condition Long QT Syndrome, though John, their blind younger son refuses to be tested. Sean tells Leo that,at their last session, Eve believed that she was possessed by evil and soon afterwards Leo and sergeant Brooks find evidence that a priest performed an exorcism on her. After recently splitting with Janet, Leo heads to Essex to meet up with old friend Sean, who has cancer and a severe drink problem. Sean explains to Leo he's been dealing with Eve Gilston, a patient for 6 months that wound up dead for no apparent reason. Massively fond of her Sean wants answers. Leo meets Eve's parents and her blind younger brother John. The parents go in for testing, to see if either has the rare Long QT syndrome, a rare condition that could have caused her heart to stop. John refused to be tested. Eve had wounds on her body that couldn't be accounted for, but Sean has held back some information. Eve spoke to Sean about an evil, a force in her bedroom, she believes she was possessed by a demon as a child.

It's like they tried to tap into the many 'possession' horror films that were hugely popular at the time, and base it on one. It had an awesome cast, Adrian Dunbar, Mark Lethern, Tamzin Outhwaite etc, but somehow it just doesn't seem to work that well, it jumps about quite a lot.

I think it's the actual story itself that doesn't quite seem to work, Silent Witness had always been real and true to life, this felt like the first time they tried to do something a little off the wall and didn't quite get it right. The acting as always can't be faulted, Adrian Dunbar is very good, Jodie Comer is excellent as young Eve. Nina Sosanya is in a different role for her as DS Brooks, nice to see her cast in a rough around the edges role.

It's quite a disappointing episode, quite confusing, make sure you watch it sober! 5/10
