Storyline

Now that Rebecca has decided not to return to "Bombshell", the creative team, beyond the need for Tom and Julia to rewrite the ending which will include one more song, has a major decision: whether to cast Ivy or Karen in the lead role for tonight's preview, the decision which could affect the show's future. Karen is the official understudy, but the understudy, as is generally the case, does not rehearse the role until after the previews have been completed. And Ivy knows the role more comprehensively at this stage having been in the lead earlier in the project's history. This issue causes major dissension among the team. A decision is made, which only increases the tension within the creative team. It also causes a four sided issue between Derek, Karen, Dev and Ivy. Meanwhile, Ellis makes an admission to Eileen, which he did for what he believed the good of the show, but which Eileen may see differently. And Frank comes to a possible impasse in his relationship with Julia, regardless... Written by Huggo

The end of a season that got more melodramatic and ridiculous every week
15 May 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Well, it happened to me again. I tried to go out and watch something that I thought might be enjoyable, even if it would be considered like more of a feminine show than a masculine one. I gave it a shot, and once again, I was snubbed.

Let me say this: I am unashamed to tell anyone that I am a fan of musical theater or that I have acted in several musicals before. I am a big fan of Broadway, and I actually could care less if that is seen as odd or irregular to some of my friends and people that know me. But having said that, I am also a fan of film and television. I believe in character development, realistic and engaging story structures, honest dialog, and strong directions and performances.

This is why "Smash" was the biggest disappointment of the television year for me.

If you have read anything I said before from this show, it is from the first half of the season. I previously wrote a recap of the first six episodes and a review of the first half finale, episode seven: "The Workshop." In the first half of the season, I was surprised at how much I was enjoying the show. Not to say I wasn't giving the show a chance coming out, but "Smash" notoriously was one of the most overly advertised shows in recent history. Anyone watching Sunday night football, the Super Bowl, and any other NBC telecast was bombarded with promotions with Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty, Debra Messing, and Anjelica Huston.
