Review: Five Stars
23 March 2014 | by See all my reviews

Andy Daly's brilliant new series, Review, has kicked off with a bang, with three excellent episodes available for your viewing pleasure or even, dare I say it, your review. Daly has always been hilarious in his comedy shows, and in my opinion most importantly, his numerous appearances on the podcast 'Comedy Bang Bang!' which may be even funnier than this program, if it were possible. For those unaware (impossible with all of the ads on Comedy Central, I know) of the premise of the show, I will try to give you a general idea. Forest Macneil (Daly's character, who is acted out a bit too well) is a reviewer. But not in the sense that we think of reviewing now. As he puts it, he reviews the greatest thing of all, 'life itself'. This, in itself, is an excellent idea. Things that you've always wanted to do, but would never try yourself. Why not? Hunting, ingesting things that would most likely kill you and all the ilk are all tackled in the first few episodes, but not in the way that you're most likely thinking. By hiding behind characters, like he does in most of his comedy outlets, Daly instead creates a mature semi-awkward comedy, roughly resembling shows like 'The Office,' and gives you a lot more behind the scenes insight on Forest and his fledgling show than you would immediately expect. It also has a great cast of characters who work at the studio, and help out Forest in many of his review segments. So, in its goal of teaching you what crazy life experiences would be like, Review is a terrible failure. In comedy, though, this show produces more drop-dead laughing moments than nearly anything on television, and will go head-to-head with any big budget program on keeping your attention. If you enjoy the Andy Daly style of comedy (I recommend checking out his podcast, 'The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project,' starting with the first episode and moving onwards) you are never going to be bored for a second of Review. The show is brilliant, and gets an easy five star rating from me.

(Edit:) The first season of Review has officially concluded, and I have to say that I have been very happy with this show as a whole. There were a few slight bumps, but Daly and his spectacularly witty writing staff have managed to pull off one of my favorite first seasons of any comedy show. (Psych, for those wondering, is also a close contender.) The season finale was honestly spectacular, and marks what would probably be my favorite episode of the season. I sincerely hope Comedy Central continues pushing this show, as this has to be its funniest title right now, especially after Colbert, another personal favorite, comes off the air. Great work, and still a strong five star rating here.
