European diseases, particularly smallpox, were devastating to American peoples and played a major role in the conquest of these regions. But the diseases were already endemic in Africa and Asia and some African people had a precursor to a vaccine for smallpox. Rather it was the Europeans that suffered from lack of immunity to tropical diseases in conquering Africa.—David FOss
