Great look at a practice in rural Michigan
AlsExGal27 December 2017
Dr. Pol, DVM, has a practice in rural Michigan, and this reality show follows him as he makes his rounds to his various farm patients, as well as the office where people bring their domestic animals. It has an old fashioned feel to it. The doc knows his patients and their owners, and you get to see him deal with birth, injuries, death, and the hard decision to put an animal down. He's not a man given with the gift of much gab, but he has a distinct likability about him. He's a man who is 75 as I am writing this, and when I first watched the show I was guessing he was in his mid to late 50s. That's what comes from doing what you love - it keeps you young at heart. Also part of the practice is his son Charles, who, as he admits, is not even a veterinary technician, just an assistant, but seems to be loving what he does and being around his dad. The office is organized and maintained by Dr. Pol's wife of 50 years, and then there is "Dr. Brenda", Brenda Grettenburger, and the junior vet on the team, Dr. Emily Thomas.

There are a wide variety of situations, animals, and dilemmas, so I am yet to get bored. I will tell you that there does seem to be a good deal of professional jealousy about Dr. Pol. If you look around the internet you'll see fellow vets talk about how uncaring the staff is and unsanitary the procedures are. Folks, it is called editing. You don't see every little thing that is done. Plus you don't wind up with 20,000 patients by being a bad vet. Dr. Pol was disciplined by a Michigan state board a few years back based on the complaint of a viewer of this show who was a retired veterinarian living in Tennessee! However, that decision was reversed and even the owners of the animal in the case in question said that they were happy with the outcome.

I'd recommend you watch the show. Just don't mention it to your vet or they are likely to start snorting, stomp out of the examining room, and fire you and your pet from their practice. Just my two cents.

If Dr Pol is on I watch it non stop. I believe it is one of the best shows ever. He is REAL. There isn't much of that anymore.

Decent show
holchie5 January 2021
This is an updated review on 11/15/21. Why do they keep remixing episodes and calling them "new?" They are old recycled parts of episodes. Will there ever be any new episodes? Please stop trying to fool people with the "new" nonsense. (My old review is below) I like the show, but would prefer not to see Charles' stories about something he "has always been interested in," and then never hear or see it again. It is just too contrived, like they have to come up with some side story every episode about him. I would rather spend that time with the animals. Other than that, it is decent reality television, much better than other reality show.

Love, love, love

I love this show! My uncle was a beloved country vet in Kansas when I was growing up. Jan reminds me of him. Never give up! The new vet Dr. Nicole Archy is a great addition to the practice. You see that she wants to learn everything she can and isn't afraid to jump right in! Hope you stay around Dr. Nicole! For all these whiny vets that are bringing up charges and ridicule Dr. Pol, he doesn't care about shiny new offices and making piles of money to drive fancy cars, etc. (you notice he drives American made Jeeps). I wish our vet was so caring. I can't leave that office for under $200. A disgrace and costly for senior citizens.

This is a great show! Obviously Dr Pol is amazing, but so is the entire staff!!! It's apparent that the community He and his staff serves, depends on Dr Pol and his highly skilled veterinary staff to ensure the long term health and wellness of their animals no matter how big or how small those animals might be! This is a great show! Sooo good for binge watching!! Highly recommended for anyone to enjoy!

This is a country practice ... not a city practice .. .
furrygodmother-1832812 November 2023
I am currently watching the series and took a look at some of the reviews. There have been criticisms of Dr. Pol's methods by some vets and others. What they are not taking into account, in some cases and which many viewers may not know or ever experienced is that a rural practice where the primary clients are farmers and residents on a very thin financial edge, is very different than a city practice where clients have funds to treat pets with expensive equipment and who have the time, patience and sometimes staff to help with the followup care. City vets are careful to not offend the humans who pay the vet bills. At a city vet my dogs go into a clinic where they are coddled by the staff, attended to with utmost care and the fees are in the high hundreds if not thousands. When I was house sitting in very rural area of Hawaii and the owner's 2 dogs got into figh that resulted in lacerated ears, the drive to the vet was 45 minutes. The vet came outside into the parking lot, the dogs never even went into the clinic (vet took a few minutes in between surgeries to attend to the combatants) I held each dogs, vet said no use to stitch them up, gave us antibiotics and off we went like. In a city clinic they would have been stitched, maybe even held overnight with lots of "oh, poor boy" vs. Dr. Pol who has a "stupid dogs... this didn't have to happen" attitude. He does not have time to coddle the pets/ livestock or the owner but he gets the job done. Rural and city are very different. In the show you see Dr. Pol, using very practical and expedient methods that save his clients money and help the animals. I have recommended this show to my friend who recently become a farmer with no prior experience so that person can learn what can befall his livestock. I find it fascinating and informative. Is it top of the line veterinary care? Not always - but it is practical rural vet care.

Love me some Dr. Pol
donnakdunbar4 July 2023
I really enjoy this show. It's wholesome entertainment that the whole family can watch. It's obvious from what they show that Dr. Pol and his staff genuinely care about the animals that visit the practice. If you need a break from bad language, politics, sex, or angst, Dr. Pol's your man.

I say "what they show" because they obviously can't show every minute of the care they give each patient. I see several negative reviews and all I can say is, you're not present when the patients are treated, so you can't comment with any certainty on the quality of care given. Dr. Pol's censure by the vet board was overturned; even the owner of the pet in question was satisfied with the care they received. (All this information is readily available from a simple search.)

Overall, a good show with a great leading guy.

Enjoyable...
JennySmuts-SA18 October 2022
...but a bit repetitive.

We also find it quite annoying that they block out some parts when showing surgery or animal wounds. If people are squeamish they shouldn't be watching this type of show.

And as some other reviewers have pointed out, we also wonder why some treatments are done without sedating the animals first? If it's a cost issue than why not show us the conversation between owner and vet? I think Dr. Pol loves the work and challenges more than he actually loves the animals.

I've been told my review is too short so this is me taking up the required characters for a review to be accepted.

BEST VET OFFICE EVER!
carolglynninmo25 December 2019
I absolutely LOVE this program! I wish I could find a reasonable vet in mid-east Mo. Every vet I have come across is only about the money , and mostly so rude. I had a vet do a surg, on a 16 yr. old dog she didn't need and killed her and only worried about the $800. Unconscionable! How do I find a REAL vet like the vets at Pol Vet Clinic? I only have a chihuahua and a main coon cat and pray I don't need a vet.

One of the better vet shows
shoottoothrills30 January 2020
I love this show contrary to what the moron below says about it Dr. Pol is an incredibly wise vet ! The only thing I have seen that disturbs me is when Dr. Pol is seeing an animal in need he has on many occasions said "You stupid dog", or "you dummy", Etc, he doesn't really say it in a friendly or joking way either. If he said this to my pet I would be incredibly offended and would probably tell him so! Other than that he is a very knowledgeable vet and does wonders for his community.

Should not be practicing!
pxg-797373 September 2023
I stopped watching because he operates as if he has no understanding about germs and transmission of infection - no gloved lancing abcesses, seldom wears a mask &never see him wash his hands. He makes snap diagnoses without touching the animal or barely examining, e.g. "It's a vitamin D deficiency" so the animal gets shot of vitamin D. He's not clairvoyant. So I stopped watching when I started to talk to him through the TV. ' So I decided to give him a second chance & watched the other day. Sure enough a concerned owner arrived with listless ring-tailed lemur. Dr Pol looked at one of his eyes & said it was v. Pale - " I don't know - maybe his iron" . So the lemur got a shot of iron. When the owner left he commented that he didn't feel good about the lemur. NEITHER DID I !. No blood drawn to check values, no stool to check for parasites, no discussion or exam to check for nutritional issues. He did nothing. I wish I could have called the owner about going to a real vet.

He seems to do well with cows so maybe he should stick to that.

I'm considering contacting the Vet Board about him. I know I'm among the very few detractors but I hope people begin to realize that he's not practicing safel.

Not getting the people who complain
kparkslpn29 September 2018
Yes they show a lot of large animal calls and sometimes the same illness multiple times but the treatment is NOT always the same. ALWAYS consult a vet but like the pot bellied pig with tetanus, you never know until you try. And the fact that one person commented about their dogs getting out unknowingly, if they had watched the episode they would know that footage was old (showing the dog leaving while being filmed) and they didn't actually go to Holland. It was a city in the US that is named Holland. So if you are going to comment I feel you should at least watch the shows you name off in the comment. Now my opinion is obviously that I love this show!! It shows that sometimes the cases we think are a lost cause can be fixed. I have seen the worst parvo cases be turned around. To put it in perspective, the lady I bought my babies from lost 15 puppies (I had already bought mine and brought them home) to parvo and she has raised many litters of pups and also tried her best to save them. So don't judge this show until you have seen it. I love learning how to help my babies out without having to spend money when I can avoid it. I don't have a lot to lose

My favorite show of all time!
casinocristina16 November 2019
The Incredible Dr. Pol is my favorite show of all time. My whole life I wanted to be a vet but it was not in the cards for me, with this show I get to live it vicariously through Dr. Pol and his beautiful staff. I love that they are real people, and they have so much soul! Dr. Pol is an example to the world, kind, honest, happy. I ask God that I please get to meet him once before I die. Thank you for making this show!

Good show, but too much of dr Pol's son
zeljkavukasin17 November 2022
Love the show, its kinda relaxing. Love dr Brenda :) They are looking lazy sometimes, like euthanising animals that does not seem that 'done'. I'm not vet tho, so I don't know, but my husband was vet technician and said on one occasion that kneeling while operating a pig ruins your knees and hurts so dr Pol maybe avoids it 😬 I also don't understand purpose od Charles, he is not a vet, but is always there and is presented like 'part of team'. Whyyy, does he live with his parents, that is the only explanation, why would he be there. He is not that funny I'm sorry, they could cut down with him. Show us dr Brenda more, she is adorable 😍

Good show just to sit back and watch and not have to think about much, it's clear why Jan is a vet and not a human doctor, the dude has no bedside manner it's hilarious!

The BEST show on TV
cariplotnikoff14 January 2022
I love Dr Pol, Diane, Charles, Dr Brenda, Dr Emily, Dr Nicole, the staff and all aspects of this series. I'd LOVE to live in Michigan and be able to visit this practice and have one of these vets be the care provider for my triplets: Herb, Harry and Larry (my three black cats) and Luna (my German Sheppard). The show brings me such joy and while I'm sad to see the passing sometimes of the animals, I know it's real life and it has to happen. I have many urns filled with previous precious souls and we all must go at some point. The care, tenderness, compassion and love that Dr Pol and the others exhibit is so beautiful and you have to be an angry, negative, miserable person not to recognize this. I watched the episode last night of Dr Emily choosing to leave the show for a position in Virginia - and I was sooooooooo sad! She's calm, brilliant, compassionate and yes has a dry sense of humour. I will miss her incredibly. As for Dr Pol and Diane, I think they are the sweetest couple and I love watching their banter and interactions and seeing their personal life unfold a bit. The show is just the best and I hope it airs for decades to come and I hope Dr Pol is able to continue to practice for decades to come (despite his ankle issue!). He is a true gem and legend in veterinary care and when the time comes to put down the scalpel and keep his shirt on...animals and their caregivers will suffer from his absence greatly. Thank you to all who make this show happen!

A hey-wait-a-minute moment
stevisart-119 June 2022
I've been watching Dr. Pol for a while now and find the show entertaining, if not informative, though a little questionable at times. Though it can be tough to fit a lot into each segment, consistency must be maintained. In a segment I just watched, a lady brings in her female mallard duck (she constantly refers to as "she" or "her") after an encounter with a raccoon. As the credits are rolling later, they revisited the duck, and it is now a male named Duke. That was a big goof for the show as well as the lady with the duck.

I will never see that show again
carinaholm-7257313 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I think dr. pol is too hard to the animals and do a lot of things that I can see is hurt at the animals. And I don´t understand that when the animal is in big pain why it don´t they get anything against pain. Like the time where he was castrate bulls without giving the bulls something so they not could feel the pain. He just get the bull into a small box and then cut the bulls testicles over with a big metal scissors. And the bulls was in so much pain it was so awful to look at and some of the bulls where jumping out of the box and ower the fence to run away from the pain. Dr. pol needs to understand that animals can feel pain just like humans. I hope that he will learn that, or that he will stop to be an veterinarian.
