The Start of Something new
nickschultz-181687 July 2023
This is the first episode of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, so its not surprising that the episode is the only the beginning of a new arc. As such, the episode spends most of its time meandering around to introduce the current situation and set up the plot. So while not too much happens, its still thoroughly entertaining. The character dynamics are fun, the voice acting is great, and as always the animation is absolute eye-candy. This episode, along with the rest of the series was directed by the ever daring director, Shota Goshozono, who also directed Chainsaw Man episode 8. And just like that episode, this episode here also has the incredibly unique animation, using complex movements unlike any other anime you'll ever see.

All in all, this episode was a great start to the season, laying down the foundation to an incredible arc and incredible character dynamics, while also showcasing the unique animation style that will populate the season.

Exciting beginning!
and_mikkelsen22 July 2023
This was actually a greay first episode to season two with a blend of everything from humor to thrilling moments! The episode does not waste time as we are also introduced to what seems to be the plot of this arc which will cover the first 5 episodes of season two! About Gojo's past!

Its nice to see the backstory of established characters to better understand what pulled Gojo and Geto appart, as we see their ideals and personality in this episode!

The animation is notably different but I don't think it is bad! Instead It creates a unique experience and the scenes remains as fluent as in season! I think the colous have become cleaner though!

I also enjoyed the direction with some creative directorial choices!

Season 2 is off to a good start!

Back with a Bang!

Warning: Spoilers
So for the start of this long-awaited season, we go all the way back to 2006 learning about Gojo and Geto's relationship and how it fell apart. The story of this episode is interesting, intriguing with a cliffhanger that will make any fan excited for what's to come.

Talking about the visuals for the episode (and seemingly this season), the art style is quite different from the first season. Choosing to go for a more cinematic approach like that of Chainsaw Man's anime which is definitely liked by me as it makes the anime feel more grand and stylised than most other shows airing at the same time.

The Lack of Juju Stroll hurts my viewing experience a bit since those charming bits used to make me laugh all day long especially the one at the end of episode 23.

If things keep going like this, we are in for a treat!

Great Start to an Amazing Arc
kobedawson15 July 2023
Honestly, I think the animation has gotten better from the previous season, not to take away anything from season 1's incredible animation but moving forward...

After watching this premiere, I feel very comfortable with everything that's gonna come later on in the season with all of the epic fights, moments and lines we're gonna get deep in the season. Not just with the hidden inventory, but I feel very comfortable with the Shibuya Incident arc.

Everyone involved with the making of this season should a get a raise lol, the voice actors, directors, animators, everyone!

But just from seeing this episode along with the opening and ending, this is gonna be an amazing season and one I've been looking forward to for years!

Imperfect animation and pacing, good potential

*This is a bare-bones/lite review made after only a single viewing. (Hence there not being any replay rating)*

A young Utahime and Mei investigate a haunted building and later a young Gojo and Geto, not quite how you'd expect them to be, are tasked with escorting a young girl to be sacrificed for the sake of the Jujutsu world. Conflicting ideologies and murderous curse users threaten the two at every turn, but they're the strongest, why should they fear the weak?

This was a wonderful return to JJK, although Hidden Inventory/Premature Death is my least favorite manga arc, it's clearly being done well and the changes made to the source material make it that much better! Expanding Utahime and Mei's roles at the beginning of this arc was a great idea and the extra character building and relationship establishing added was also amazing. Aside from that most everything was manga accurate with the exception of some anime only scenes and moved around pieces. The story moves a bit fast after the beginning, but that's to be expected, this arc is by no means long and the start of it is far from the best part. Aside from the pacing issues later on, the episode has some exposition dump issues, but they're not that bad all things considered. The biggest Hindrance to this episode was, oddly enough, the animation itself, which held down the beginning quite a lot and therefore dampened the whole experience for me, but this is about the writing, and that was phenomenal. Geto and Gojo's conflicting morals are really wonderfully shown as well as the tension between the two despite their friendship, plus Ieri is a gremlin, as she should be, Mei is perfect, and Utahime is as useless as you'd expect her to be. Most everything writing wise is great, with only some minor bumps here and there, and the atmosphere is great and well established in every scene.

There's nothing to say about the Japanese voice acting aside from "it's perfect." I mean, Toji's voice is a little iffy for me near the end but I expect to grow to like it more and more. Aside from that, basically everyone is perfect beyond compare, as expected of a high-quality anime.

Now for the meat. The animation for the first several minutes isn't very good. I'm sorry, but it isn't. The 3D feels way too 3D and the 2D often feels floaty and also way too fluid and out of place. There also seem to be some clearly clashing animation and art styles slammed together that just make the beginning feel disjointed, ruining a creepy and intriguing atmosphere. That said, there are plenty of good parts early on as well, but they just don't make up for the bad parts sadly. Thankfully, later on, there is significantly better animation and far less 3D, with a great basketball scene, Geto getting some great action, and some fun off model animation too, even though it also absolutely has its faults. The animation is pretty stellar after the beginning, even with some weirdness and hiccups here and there, and from that point on the pacing is more the issue, but really, this is Hidden Inventory, I didn't expect the pacing to be perfect whatsoever. Aside from that, the music and sounds were absolutely amazing, flawless even, and aside from a few scenes, the cinematography was amazing, with perfect camera placements for each scene, giving creepy vibes and funny vibes exactly when needed, as well as enhancing the more serious and dramatic moments. The character designs are amazing, same with the set design, as the set pieces are just beautiful, even if we move past some far too fast, but that said, there are minor issues with them, such as Gojo's eyes looking bland and sets being kinda iffy mostly due to the CG used. Ignoring the first several minutes however, this episode has really good animation, even if it's quite a bit away from perfect, and I love the bright atmosphere, especially as a manga reader who knows what's coming.

All in all, a good start to the new season and a fun episode with everything we love about JJK except for a flawless massive fight scene, but we got inklings and next episode will get much more. Overall the animation is the worst part of this episode, with the 3D holding the beginning down, followed by iffy pacing in the latter half of the episode holding down the now fantastic animation. The writing is gold, the acting is as good as it possibly could be, and all in all, I'm excited to see my least favorite arc be given such a glow up and hope next episode fixes even more issues I have with it, such as the pacing. I'm excited for this season, I can't wait for next week's episode, and I can't wait to start throwing out 10/10 left and right!

Solid start
oakparkalex-112 July 2023
Full disclosure: I've already read the manga and am watching this anime just to witness the top-tier animation. If Studio Mappa can pull off the upcoming fight scenes, JJK will be the DBZ for kids worldwide.

This episode is promising. The animation retains the high quality from season 1, with stylistic changed to reflect that this is a prologue arc from the last. However, their are some goofy animation shots. In particular for a jump scare in a haunted house, they use rotoscoping when a character shrieks... it is off putting, uncanny valley animation. The haunted house investigation is faithful to the manga but pure filler. Filler is fortunately a rare thing in this story.

So you get a first half that resembles a one-off villain of the week from a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure episode. The second half introduces characters and sets the plot in motion with a exposition dump. The animation team milks the manga for as much interest as they can, particularly with some sakuga combat near the end. I give this EP a 7 because future episodes will be even better once the main fights pick up.

Also, it looks like the Shibuya Incident Arc will have to wait until season 3... I'm disappointed but understand. Studio Mappa's animators need some rest from all the excellent shows they put out week after week.

Poor Animation!?
bllues-396287 July 2023
That incredible MAPPA studio is showing signs of overload (It's the same director!?) because these rotoscoped character animations and poor use of 3d do not match any of the first season episodes at all, it gave a little fear for what is to come, despite the generally inflated high scores for less cerebral fans, I hope for the best, after all the wait was long for 2019's GotY season 2, c'mon be better, please!

Everyone is super excited to like it, but when you raise the bar on season 1 animation and double down on Chainsaw Man the least you expect is to do the same, Gojo is an amazing and mysterious character, we needed pills of knowledge of his history and not an entire season, inflation also happens in the presentation of new characters, if you commit to making episodes at the pace of a One Piece ok to introduce dozens of new characters, but still they never abandoned Luffy for an entire season, I think it's risky, but I just think that because the first episode was weak and he would have to be heavenly, could be, what happened? Or I'm crazy!? Lmk lol.

Wow, new director
thelebowskimane8 July 2023
The new animation style I hate, the extremely cartoonish character models at times breaks the show. The first season animation is far superior. They also try to copy chainsaw man camera shots at times.

I did like the part where they did a 90s shot of old animation though that was cool.

I just can't get past this new animation....who's idea was it or who said well "lets completely change the animation" guess they didn't learn from One punch man.

It's like they make something new (the first season) then if it does well and know people love it they just say screw it and do whatever. This is BS.
