From ‘Archer’ to ‘South Park,’ the Emmy Race Gets Animated

From ‘Archer’ to ‘South Park,’ the Emmy Race Gets Animated
In the animated series category, there is little suspense year-to-year over which shows will get nominated since there are four key shows — led by “The Simpsons,” with 26 nominations and 10 wins over 28 seasons — that have been honored for the bulk of their runs. The real question is which one will win, so picking the right episode for Emmy submission is key. “I have a highly scientific system,” jokes longtime “Simpsons” showrunner Al Jean. “I usually go with the highest-rated episode on IMDb.” This year Jean will put his system to the test against returnees “Archer,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “South Park,” and the newcomer: “Elena of Avalor”/“Sofia the First” crossover episode, “Elena and the Secret of Avalor.”

Emmys 2017 Trivia: Julia Louis-Dreyfus Moves One Step Closer to History & 18 More Wild Things About This Year’s Noms
This could be the year that Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes Emmy history.

Nominated once again for playing Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” Louis-Dreyfus is the favorite to win her sixth consecutive Emmy as outstanding comedy actress. In doing so, she would beat the record for most Emmys won by a performer in the same role for the same series.

Right now, Louis-Dreyfus is in a three-way tie with Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”) and Don Knotts (“Andy Griffith Show”). All three thesps won five Emmys for their roles on those shows. Now, Louis-Dreyfus is poised to leap ahead.

What’s more, she’s also in line this year to tie Cloris Leachman for the most Emmys ever won by a female performer. Leachman has eight; Louis-Dreyfus has seven – tied with Mary Tyler Moore and Allison Janney. (Janney, of course, is competing with Louis-Dreyfus in the comedy

7 New Netflix Shows to Binge in April 2017, and The Best Episodes of Each

7 New Netflix Shows to Binge in April 2017, and The Best Episodes of Each
1. “Dear White People” Season 1 (available April 28)

Why Should I Watch It? “Dear White People” is based on Justin Simien’s 2014 Sundance sensation of the same name, pulling characters and plot lines from the satirical comedy that helped introduce us to the glory that is Tessa Thompson. While the “Creed” star won’t be returning, other breakouts from the film are, and the core story — of a predominantly white Ivy League university facing a heated racial debate after a misguided blackface Halloween party — has been refined to fit a serialized format. It is hilarious, sharp, and so timely it hurts. Don’t miss it.

Best Episode: We caught the first two at SXSW, and though both are absolutely stellar, I’ve got to give the edge to the pilot. Logan Browning, as a radio personality who hosts a show titled “Dear White People,” gives a finely layered turn and the general

As ‘Kids’ Upfront’ Kicks Off, Disney Woos Madison Avenue

Disney is hoping to find new reason for Sofia the First and K.C. Cooper to smile: The company anticipates healthy demand for advertising as the TV industry ushers in the earliest part of the annual ad-sales ritual known as the “upfront” that focuses on the medium’s youngest viewers.

“We are optimistic it’s going to be a strong marketplace,” said Rita Ferro, president of ad sales for the company’s Disney ABC Television, which encompasses ABC, Freeform and a suite of kids-focused cable networks. The kids-tv market – valued at approximately $800 million in advance advertising commitments from Madison Avenue – gets underway this week, with presentations expectd from Disney as well as Viacom’s Nickelodeon. Early indicators from toy manufacturers and movie studios looks strong, added Ferro, in an interview.

The question for most TV networks will be whether they can surpass last year’s results. In 2016’s market, Disney’s kids’ properties – which include Disney Channel, Disney

Tweeks: Steven Universe Interviews

  • Comicmix
Steven Universe is one of our favorite cartoons ever and so we were really excited to get to interview them at Comic Con.

We talked to Zach Callison (who is not only the voice of Steven, but also of Prince James in Sofia the First), Ian Jones-Quartey (storyboarded/animator), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl….who Anya has been singing along to since she was 2 years old — no kidding, Deedee was Jasmine in the Aladdin Spectacular at Disney’s California Adventure), Estelle (Garnet), and Rebecca Sugar, the show’s composer & creator, who incidentally was shattering glass ceilings as the first woman to independently create a series for Cartoon Network! What’s really cool about Rebecca, as you’ll find out in our interview is that she’s a bit of a musical theatre geek like us. She not only got a song idea from Sweeney Todd, but she quotes Bob Fosse too.

Mipcom: France’s TeamTo, Beijing’s Taikong Works Close ‘Yellowbird’ Distribution Deal for China (Exclusive)

Cannes — In a landmark deal for French animation, Paris and L.A.-based CGI company TeamTo and Beijing’s Taikong Works has closed an all-rights distribution deal for China on TeamTo’s animated feature “Yellowbird.”

Founded by producer-directors Jinsong Hu and Kexin Liu in 2008, production-distribution studio Taikong Works plans a theatrical release in China around the Chinese New Year in late January or February.

“This is the first deal of a relationship we want to build together,” TeamTo founder-producer Guillaume Hellouin said at Mipcom.

While most U..S. animation production ventures with China – think Oriental DreamWorks – whether individual movies or corporate joint ventures, seek via co-production a way into China’s expanding film/TV markets, TeamTo is looking to create global content in its own renowned French studios from content co-produced or originated in China.

The new partners, which will share Chinese merchandising revenues on ‘Yellowbird,” are now discussing a potential sequel to “Yellowbird.

The Lion Guard: Unleash The Power DVD Review

The Lion Guard is a somewhat surprisingly good show airing on Disney Junior, and the story of Kion and his friends continues with a new DVD release The Lion Guard: Unleash the Power.

The release is the first collection of episodes available on DVD, and it’s not only a good selection because these are episodes that focus on the individual members of the Guard, but because these are some of the series’ most rewatchable efforts.

The show is not just a fun adventure for kids, but the series takes on a broad range within its episodic content, tackling some tricky issues, without actually decoding its own efforts and bogging down in overt explanation.

For example, the episode Fuli’s New Family spans a variety of issues, but chief among them is an examination of the idea that just because doing something seems objectively “right,” or, “how friends act,
