The guest star comes this close to stealing the whole episode

A curious continuation of the prison scam, 'Thick As Mud' works beautifully as a stand-alone, while still maintaining the various plot threads. This time, it's Dewey's turn for suffering in a race against time to save his kidneys ("These are the end times for Dewey Crowe!"). This is a fun case, not only because of the dimwit's antics, but for Raylan giving chase and putting the bizarre pieces together. That, and bringing him in contact with a diabolical nurse (Maggie Lawson), which is my favorite part of this. The actress perfectly fits Raylan's description ("Cuter than a pailful of kittens") and wields a delightful charm. Honestly, the bad news is that this is it for her. It really says something when you stroll onto a show like this for a one-off and leave a lasting impression.

But it's not entirely episodic, what with Devil's betrayal finally bringing Boyd and Quarles at odds. That final scene is a tremendous mix of short-lived pleasantries and thinly-veiled threats. Electricity at its finest!

Warning: Spoilers
Dewy is conned into robbing stores to get his kidneys back, which is like a time laps mystery. Well written. The scene with the Christine story owner is classic. The banter between Raylin, and Dewy is priceless. Mean while Boyd has a rival, which make for an interesting turn of events. Will the Dixie Mafia take Boyd down? One wonders what the crazy blond guy will do next as Thick as Mud has a wild card which keep the viewer on edge for season 3. Seven out of ten.
