Prior to shooting, Sofia Coppola got the cast to fake-burgle a house to see what mistakes they'd make.
The scene at Paris Hilton's house was actually filmed there.
Kirsten Dunst's cameo, as herself, was not part of the original script. Instead, it was incorporated into the film, after Dunst visited Sofia Coppola on set. Dunst previously starred in Coppola's The Virgin Suicides (1999) and Marie Antoinette (2006).
Emma Watson's wallet was stolen while filming.
Emma Watson said she researched her role by watching "a ton of reality TV" including The Hills (2006) and Keeping Up with the Kardashians (2007). She also listened to Britney Spears's 'Femme Fatale' album to get into the mindframe of her character.
It is said by insiders that Emma Watson watched her character, Alexis Neiers's reality television show, Pretty Wild (2010) to study her body language and how she acted around people.
This is the first film starring Emma Watson which was not based on a book.
Claire Julien (Chloe) is the only cast member who's actually from Los Angeles. She helped the others learn the Calabasas dialect. Emma Watson is from England, Israel Broussard is from Mississippi, Katie Chang is from Chicago, and Taissa Farmiga is from New Jersey.
Sofia Coppola considered cutting the slow zoom-in shot of the glass house heist, but cinematographer Harris Savides convinced her to keep it in. It is now the most celebrated shot of the film.
The last film of Harris Savides, who died in October 2012, six months after the end of principal photography. When he became ill partway through shooting, Christopher Blauvelt was brought in to complete the film; the two share credit.

Sofia Coppola had lunch several times with real-life convicted Bling Ring burglar Nick Frank Prugo, the basis of the film's character Marc. Prugo, and his gang of thieves, reportedly stole over three million dollars from celebrity houses. After serving a year in jail, Prugo claimed, as of May 2013, that he had not seen the film yet.
