"If I've said anything to insult you, believe me." - Milton Berle
classicsoncall19 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
With the passage of time and Robert Craig Knievel's death in 2007, the history of his daring stunts and outlandish notoriety seems to be fading from memory. But back in 1975, some months after the famous Snake River Canyon jump of August 8th, 1974, Evil Knievel was honored as Man of the Hour by Dean Martin and his Celebrity Roast panel. It was fresh on the minds of the entertainers gathered to honor Knievel, and many of the presenters got in their digs concerning his daring stunt.

I used to watch these Roasts back in the day, and remember catching this one at the time as well. The thing that really surprised me while watching the show today was the host of big name entertainers who were on hand for this one considering that Knievel wasn't a Hollywood or TV celebrity. You had stars like Ernest Borgnine, Milton Berle, Don Rickles, Gabe Kaplan, Glen Campbell and Cliff Robertson to name a few. Martin often had someone on hand as well from the political arena, and this was another of those Roasts that saw Senator Barry Goldwater on the dais. Ruth Buzzi showed up as her Laugh-In character Gladys Ormphby, handbag in tow just itching to wail in on Dino and the guest of honor, which she did before her segment was over. She even got in a lick on someone down in the audience, though that may have been arranged ahead of time.

As for Knievel, he looked none the worse for wear given his choice of occupation. Looking relaxed and casual, he bore the brunt of everyone's jabs in good humor and managed to get in a few good shots of his own when it was his turn to speak. If you were around back in the Seventies, you really couldn't miss hearing about Evil Knievel and his next great stunt, and this show is a neat reminder of his glory days as a daredevil.

seeking authoritative air dates for DMCR shows
ssybesma2 January 2016
Great roast...one of the best!!! However, do we know for certain this aired on Tuesday, November 11th, 1975? Is there a way to know any of the DMCR air dates for certain? TV.com shows Monday, November 10th, 1975. I think that's a lot less likely because of the ratings competition with Monday Night Football. Wikipedia had Saturday, October 11th...but I didn't see any authority quoted for that date.

Tuesday, November 11th, 1975 makes more sense because Police Story didn't have an episode on that date, but I just cannot prove your information is authoritative.

Incidentally, bit of trivia. This was not the day Veteran's Day was officially celebrated. In the years 1971 to 1977, it was celebrated on the last Monday of October...only period in history when it was celebrated more than one day either side of November 11th.

The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast: Evil Knievel (1975)

This episode in the often hilarious Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts isn't the best but it's certainly far from the worst. There are several funny roasts throughout the fifty minute running time and as you'd expect the typical comedies rank among the highlights of the show. You've got Milton Burle who has to be one of the greatest comedians to ever live simply because he could make just about any joke work. Ruth Buzzi has always been very underrated and her skit here once again adds some great laughs. Then you've got Don Rickles who gets the most screen time and pretty much blasts everyone on the panel in hilarious fashion.

Some of the acts aren't that funny and this includes Joyce Brothers, Jackie Cooper and Glen Campbell who gets the shortest amount of time that I've seen from any roast. Ernest Borgnine is also on hand but his material wasn't all that great. For the most part this is a very uneven episode but there are enough great laughs to make it worth watching.
