Thn’s 2012 Rundown – May & June

20 December 2012 3:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

As spring bled into summer, we saw the release of the year’s most gargantuan mainstream hit. It was The Avengers (aka Avengers Assemble), in case you spent the last year roaming the arctic regions of Greenland; and even then, an amiable Inuit with a Hulk hoodie probably told you about it.

May

The long awaited release of The Avengers saw cinema-goers turn out in droves. It was seven years in the making, and many hardcore fans had been waiting far longer than that, so thankfully, the majority were not left disappointed. Otherwise, who knows what level of extreme backlash could have erupted… although millions of geeks acutely describing their grievances in a respectful manner on film forums would have been the most likely scenario. Our very own Dan was delighted by what he saw, and described it as being ‘utterly stimulating, satisfyingly scripted and damn right faultless big screen entertainment. »

Another short film has been scooped up to be made into a feature film as Variety reports that Paramount has acquired Clark Baker's sci-fi/horror short film Vessel and tapped genre scribe Stephen Susco (The Grudge) to write and produce the feature version, which will be directed by Baker.

Described as being in the vein of Alien, The Thing and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the short film Vessel blended practical creature effects with modern VFX to tell the story of a group of airplane passengers who encounter an otherwordly force shortly after takeoff and are thrown into a fight for their lives.

The short, which Baker funded via Kickstarter, was written by the helmer's fellow Chapman University grads Matt and Ross Duffer, who wrote and directed WB's upcoming thriller "Hidden" starring Alexander Skarsgard and Andrea Riseborough.

Shooting Starts on Skarsgard’s “Hidden”

16 August 2012 10:27 AM, PDT | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

WB has started shooting the post-apocalyptic film Hidden, starring True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard and Andrea Riseborough, according to Styd. The film is described as follows:

Ray (Skarsgård), Claire (Riseborough) and their seven-year-old daughter, Zoe, are an average American family in Kingsville, North Carolina—except they have existed in a bomb shelter since escaping a day of devastation that changed everything.

For 301 days, they have transformed their cement prison into a home, holding on to memories of the past and hope for a normal life someday. And for 301 days, the family has eluded what looms above the surface—the heavy breathing and booming footsteps that punctuate the night, threatening their fragile existence.

All the while, the family has managed to stay hidden. Until now. Now their safe haven has been breached…and something is coming for them.

Matt and Ross Duffer wrote the script and will make their directorial debut on the promising sounding film. »

Andrea Riseborough Becomes ‘Hidden’ With Alexander Skarsgard; Hannah Marks ‘Can’t Win’

25 April 2012 1:58 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Three weeks after landing their first lead, THR informs us that Warners’ Hidden have nabbed Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion, Never Let Me Go) to take a leading role next to Alexander Skarsgård. In Ross and Matt Duffer‘s “elevated horror-thriller,” the both of them will play the heads of a family forced to go underground after some mysterious disease breaks out. (We can presume conflict will ensue.)

That’s all we’ve really got — and what we’ve got isn’t a lot, if you’ll allow me to briefly rhyme — but we’ve already been given a good duo for what, otherwise, could have been a disposable studio thriller. Consider me more and more interested with each passing development.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Hannah Marks (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Runaways) will be starring alongside Michael Pitt on his next project, You Can’t Win. Starring, co-written, and produced by the young actor, »

Casting Call: Josh Duhamel to Lead Nicholas Sparks Adaptation Safe Haven; Andrea Riseborough Joins Alexander Skarsgard in Hidden

25 April 2012 1:52 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share this afternoon.  First up, Josh Duhamel is ready to get his Nicholas Sparks on.  Variety reports that the Transformers star is in negotiations to lead the adaptation of Sparks’ Safe Haven.  The story centers on a young woman with a dark past who arrives in a small North Carolina town, and reluctantly begins a relationship with a widowed store owner and his two children, and a friendship with her plainspoken neighbor.  Duhamel would play the widowed store owner, but producers are still trying to fill the female lead role.  Also, I’m assuming someone dies at the end. Lasse Hallström (Chocolat) is onboard to direct and the film already has a pre-Valentine’s Day release date set for February 8th, 2013.  The Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Lucky One, starring Zac Efron, opened to a successful number two at the box office last weekend. »
